FOCUS MK 1 Correct Part No. for rear brake Hose HL 5678?

Hi all. Had a bit of a wake up the other day setting off to work. Only gone 500 yards and I hit the brakes and the pedal dropped almost to floor. Stopped just in time and the brake light came on. Investigation revealed a split hose into the drivers rear drum as per the pics. Can you please confirm this is the actual part number...SAE J1401 1/8" HL 5678 as printed on the hose. Any idea of part and labour costs to replace including fluid and bleeding. Focus MK 1 Auto 1.6 16v. Thanks in advance all.

Looking again at the picture of the split/torn hose, I'm still racking my brains as to what may has caused it and wonder if these hoses fail as shown. I can't recall hitting anything that would have caused such damage and even wondered if it has been done deliberately by someone, though I cannot think why.

That is an odd one.  If the rest of the hose was showing signs of age with cracking then I'd say it's just fatigue.  But that hose actually looks pretty new, I've seen worse condition hoses on 7/8 year old cars, I really don't think that's done 20 years. 

Difficult to make out distances on the picture but could it have been rubbing on that bracket directly below it when the suspension is in full droop?

Yeah, that's what I thought. No warning at all the day before when all seemed fine, no brake light on which you might expect if a gradual crack had been getting worse... then bang, next morning, no brakes and that hell of a rip in the hose.

They do fail suddenly when they go due to the extreme pressure in there, there's not usually any warning or dash light beforehand.

The outside layer of the hose can get a lot of cracking/crazing while the inside is still ok though.

This is just a thought, not a known fact !!

Usually on a hydraulic pipe that has a crimp connector fitted there is inside of the flexible rubber hose a metal tube insert.

The metal tube insert projects further up inside the hose than the external crimp fitting. Looking at your photos it looks like the break in the pipe has occurred at the point that the internal metal insert ends. If that is the case then it could be caused by the hose been repeatedly 'flexed' at that point causing stress and eventually the outer rubber hose failing.

Yeah, can see your point. May well have contributed to creating a weak point. I've dismissed the thought of foul play. It is an old vehicle after all.

Hi all. I will try here first as it may be linked to the issue discussed here...My rear brake hose has been replaced by an auto garage and I also asked them to renew the brake fluid rather than just topping up any lost in the procedure. Within about a week I noticed that the ABS light was now coming on intermittently. I did read in the Haynes manual that when replacing brake fluid care must be taken not to allow air into the system as this would affect the ABS. It mentions that Ford have a special procedure or equipment to deal with this. From a brief look around forums I can only think it is an air problem in the ABS, or as it is intermittent, possibly something to do with the rear wheel speed sensor. Anyone have any thoughts? I'll leave this here for a while before posting a separate post. Cheers all.
