Failed MOT on emissions - help

Featured Replies

I've just had my 2018 Focus fail it's MOT on emissions and some of the numbers seem high. It's only done 34,000 miles so I'm at a loss as to what it could be. Anyone with any ideas as to what the issue could be as the garage said to leave it with them to run some tests and I'd like to be able to be armed with some information so I can discuss any proposed work with them. Any help will be much appreciated. Test results attached

Is the car needing a service?

When was the air filter changed?

When were the spark plugs changed?

throw some cleaner down its neck give it a good blast and retest while hot

Check the oil level as well.  If it's excessively high it could be burning some.

I agree with testing it hot as well, not just relying on the gauge.

Thanks for the pointers DaveT70.

Gave the car a service and changed the spark plugs and passed with flying colours!

I'm glad I raised this as it could have been an expensive problem to sort out if left to the garage to search for solutions. Shows the importance of keeping on top of your servicing and maintenance!

Hi,

Has the spark plugs completely resolved the issue - We have got a 69 plate ford focus eco boost with the same issue - failed MOT due to emissions In sept 23 after fighting ford as they said we needed a new CAT, Lookers finally found that there was a PCM update required - this was done and and the car passed. Move forward 4 months and the engine management light flickered on and off, with this we decided to do a free emissions test with Halfords and have found that the car emissions had started increasing again and only just scraping passed the test - it failed fast idle. Ford are saying they won't even discuss the issue again until we pay for another diagnostic test. - Any advice would be appreciated - Thank you

Change the plugs, make sure the air cleaner is clean, put a tank full of E5 (Super) in and take it for a blast, getting the revs past 4,500RPM, then take it for re-test and it will pass
