Help!! Stupidly put my keys on top of the dashboard

Featured Replies

So i stupidly put my keys on top of the dashboard and forgot they were there when i moved off the keys fell down the air vent is there a easy way to get them out without taking it all a part.

No.  Could try a magnet on a string, but I wouldn't hold out much hope tbh.

depending on where it went down, remove the glovebox, then if possible the stereo, the side panel tunnel trim, find a really bumpy road and give it a wazz, see if you can hear it move

Hard to drive without the keys 😆

House keys then ?

You got a phone with a camera on it ? If so try to hold the phone either above the vent from the inside or looking down through the windscreen, see if you can spot exactly where they are.

very thin alloy welding rod with a hook could be an idea, easy to bend like, better than a bike spoke or steel coat hanger.

Tbf keyless start would still work with the fob in the HVAC box.

The windscreen vent duct is very slim to create a faster/further airflow up the screen.  (Like putting your finger over a hose end.)  You won't be able to see down it.  Is the windscreen vent open if you have manual climate?

If you're lucky, the keys will eventually drop right to the bottom of the HVAC box and may be accessible through the pollen filter hole.  Again, you would probably need a magnet to reach them.  The heater matrix and AC evaporator are made of ally so the magnet shouldn't get stuck to anything other than the keys.

what no spare ???????

What vent are we talking about ?

I find it hard to see how a Keyfob, presumably on a key ring possibly with at least one other key, could accidentally fall through any air vent on the dashboard.

Perhaps I'm just totally misunderstanding what has happened here, or I'm thinking of the wrong vent?

You may have been misled by my humorous key fob quip.  It's just a house key or two, could easily slip through there.

TBF i looked at mine and there is quite a gap between the back of the dash and the glass, possibly why places like Aliexpress sell a rubber gap filler gaskets

Here's an after thought I've just remembered about.....I dropped a large screw down a vent on my old Rover years ago, I blocked off all the air vents but kept one foot vent open and the vent where the screw fell in, I used me hoover which had a blow out option, crammed the nozzle into the lower vent, turned the hoover on and the huge blast of air blew out the screw.

Maybe this could be an idea ?

Decades ago somebody blocked me in for a whole day so I tried to open the car using a slim jim but I dropped it down into the door.  I've often thought about it rattling about in there and then ensuing investigation.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
