What is the steel wire hook in the jack kit for?

Featured Replies

I bought a jack kit from a breakers for someone else I know, as the Mk2 they just bought came without one.

I took it from a scrap 54 Plate C-Max.

What is the steel hook in the bottom left corner of the polystyrene holder for? The best idea I could come up with is pulling off the wheel trims from steel wheels. Although my Mk2 LX had steel wheels from new, the handbook doesn't mention the hook.

This is not the actual kit, just an image from an ebay auction with the same hook.

The brace in the kit also has a thread for the tow eye on the opposite end to the wheel nut socket.

Is this to screw in the tow eye to lengthen the handle for extra leverage on over-tightened wheel nuts?

It's for removing VW plastic wheel nut caps.

I have no idea why it'd be in a Ford spare wheel kit.

Some cars also have plastic centre caps that are removed with this hook 👍

As I think the tow hook has a LH thread, if it fits in the end of the brace, then almost certainly.

I should have quoted the above !

Nut-covering centre caps generally use a flat hook like this.  I'm not sure the little wire hook would be much use for those?

Both of my Ford Galaxy's had the 'wire hook' to remove the centre wheel caps. You just inserted through any of the holes in the fake Allen head screws and pulled the cap off.

They come with couriers but no caps to take off.

I'm wondering if it's to flip out the towing eye cover?

Doesn't look like it. 🤔

  1. Gently press the towing eye attachment point cover at the position indicated.
  1. Gently pull it straight out.

Thanks for the replies.

As for the towing eye thread, on the Mk2 it is behind the top part of the driver's side fog lamp trim.

When I fitted the fog lamps a few weeks back, I found these covers difficult to remove. It seemed like the plastic clips weren't made to be easily removed after factory fitting.

I am tempted to cut a hole in the right position and fit a plastic plug.

While we are on the subject of the spare wheel kit, does anyone know why the tow hook has a left hand thread. It's always seemed unnecessary to me.

Ropes are twisted with a right hand thread.  The tension on a tow rope could unscrew a standard thread over time.

Tom, well done.

I never thought of that!
