Juddery throttle on Transit Connect 1.8tdci

Featured Replies

Evening boys and girls.

I bought a 2010 Connect 1.8tdci a couple of weeks ago and I'm quite happy with it in general. However the way the throttle operates is quite annoying. It's just not that linear and quite rough/juddery from 0% to let's say 30%. I try to drive very carefully but even the slightest move of the right foot results in the van either racing or engine braking, just like there was nothing in between. It seems to be much smoother at higher revs. So far I've swapped the throttle pedal for a second hand one, cleaned the MAF and replaced fuel filter but to no avail. If someone could point me in the right directions that would be much appreciated.

Try cleaning the throttle body (inside as well) as it may be sticking.

Thanks Dave. I was under impression there was no throttle body on the 1.8tdci?

Crikey, maybe there isn't.

Someone will be along to advise

No worries. I will be taking the van to a mate's garage this weekend and will get it plugged it to his diagnostic equipment

Check the tiny pipe to the MAP sensor hasn't split.  Though I'd expect issues further up the rev range as well if it had.

EGR would be my second thought as well.  Though it may be a wiring issue to the pedal sensor.  Hopefully diag's will pinpoint one area.

Thanks all. I blanked the EGR off last week but that didn't change anything. Am I right thinking that if it was faulty then blanking wouldn't help?

If it was jerky in opening, a blank would stop that affecting the drive.  It's only when they have electronic faults that blanking doesn't help.

As stated above, clean several of the intake components like the intake tube remove the mass air flow sensor and clan that as well. You may need a new sensor. Now I'm leaning towards a spark plug issue, could be misfire without a code. But I've notice a rash of these types of engine troubles due to poor gasoline.  Not sure if you can get this product in your country.. but Here in the states, we've been using the gumout tuner up in a can. it's like a gas treatment but better. We've bene isolating stations that sell poor fuel but if by chance one sneaks in we put a drop or two in the fuel system. This revives the system hands down and the van is peppy again

If they've put any gasoline in a 1.8 TDCI that would definitely explain the fault...

Thanks for all your input chaps. So I yook it to the local garage to get it plugged in and diagnosed. The "technician" only said "it's all good mate". I just didn't believe that and decided to get an wireless obd plug and downloaded the Forscan app. The van throws a P0406 code, high voltage coming from the egr sensor, so I'm suspecting a knackered actuator or just mucky sensor. The mechanic must have just cleared the codes and wasn't bothered to see if they would come back. I'm tied up with work at the moment but will get at it at my earliest convenience and post an update
