Mk 4 1.5 ecoboost accessory ‘wet belt’ issues / replacement

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

interested to know if there are any mk 4 1.5L ecoboost owners out there who have had issues with limp mode, powertrain warning lights. I’m fine so far touch wood! and have clocked up 67k from new. My understanding is that we just have the accessory wet belt and a chain for the drive train unlike the unlucky fated 1.0L ecoboost owners.

That said given all the horrendous reports from 1.0L ecoboost owners and the questionable best estimates of 126k mile replacement schedule for the accessory wet belt, was wondering if any of the mk 1.5L ecoboost clan have seen premature wear issues with the accessory wet belt and or decided to pre-emptively change it well ahead of schedule.

I’m due a service in a couple of thousand miles and am going to have the accessory belt changed then.

Really interested to know what others think…

Have attached the relevant pages from the maintenance manual that covers replacement on both the 150 and 182bhp variants of the 1.5L ecoboost engine in mk4’s.

The accessory belt is dry and easily visible externally.  They've been tried & tested for years and generally do last 100k or more.  The official interval on this engine is 8 years or 100k.  They often start slipping and squealing long before breaking, so you'd get warning signs.  They're not toothed or timed, so a small amount of slip doesn't cause any damage.  Personally, I wouldn't replace the accessory belt until you can see or hear signs of wear on it.

On your engine, although the cams are driven by a chain, you do still have a wet-belt to run the oil pump.  The recommended replacement interval for the oil pump wet belt is 10 years or 150k miles.
