MK4 Ecoblue (2020) Belt In Oil or Chain?

Featured Replies

Good evening everybody, hope you are all OK.

I have a question to make,

do my focus has a belt in oil or a chain for the camshaft?

Is it reliable in combination with the frequent oil and filter changes every 10.000 kms (6200 miles)?

I' ve readen that the oil pump clogs easily due to the wear of the material of the belt leading to unpleasant situations...

MODEL: Ford Focus ecoblue 1,5 ZTDA 2020 model.

Thanks a lot in advance!

It has a timing chain, all Focus Mk4 do except the 2.0 diesel.

You still have a wet belt for the oil pump.

Edit ====

Error in the information I gave above. The 1.5 Ecoblue (diesel) does not have a timing chain, it has a standard 'dry' timing belt.

The 1.5 ecoblue( diesel)  is dry cambelt. The 1.5 petrol is chain and wet oil pump belt.

Oh that is an excellent information because if the cambelt is dry i suppose i can feel safer right?

A chained cambelt (i apologize if i am writting it wrong) is better than a dry cambelt. My corolla 4ZZFE had a chained cam and it was ''immortal''!!!

Thanks a lot for the reply!!!

It is timing chain belt.

It is not like focus mk3 and mk3,5.

I dont know if the same belt gets inside the engine oil somehow.

Does it?

Nope, engine is pretty much the same as but obviously not exact to MK3 and 3.5.

Cam cover off pretty much like the MK2,2.5 mk3 1600 and MK3.5 1.5.

Then what you see is what you get.

Nice. So it doesnt get inside the oil.

Thank you.

What about the oil pump?Is it chained or belted? In oil or dry?

You were such so helpful with your reply! Thanks a lot.

It is a belt not a chain.

I think you're confusing this engine with the 1.0 EcoBoost.  This is a 1.5 diesel.

The oil pump on these does not use a belt or a chain.  It is fitted around the crankshaft and driven directly from it.

He ment the material. I guess.

There is no extra material.  The pump on this engine is fitted around the crankshaft.  Nothing needed to link between them.

Understood.

Ok to clarify, since I lost track a bit among the posts - A Summary of the above

2020 Focus 1.5 diesel ecoblue ...

Cambelt is external i.e. what I would consider a"normal" one and is NOT inside the engine somewhere. So probably costs nearer £300 than £1600 to replace and doesn't dump bits of itself in the engine oil!

Oil pump again is what I would call normal i.e. driven directly from the crankshaft with no belts or chains involved!

PS where can I find the cambelt change interval? OOPS scratch that last query, found a doc I downloaded from ETIS a couple of years back, have attached it

I'm looking to buy one of them Focus ST Lines with the 1.5 ego blue engine 120 PS diesel are there a web belt or a dry belt people are telling me different things

1.5 EcoBlue is dry belt.  It does also have a small chain between the two camshafts which can break.

So is the 1.5 diesel ego blue no good thought it had a dry timing belt and a belt that droves the oil pump in oil who makes the engine for the 1.5 eco blue some people are saying it's Peugeot engine I'm looking at an ST line 2021 lovely car but I'm hearing different stories about the egoboom do they carry on to the 2021 version I taught ford change them at 2019

You're confusing the petrol & diesel engines.

1.5 EcoBlue (diesel) - Dry timing belt, small cam chain, direct oil pump drive.

1.5 EcoBoost (petrol) - Timing chain, wetbelt for oil pump drive.

Yes the 1.5 EcoBlue is at least partly made by Peugeot.  As the successive 1.4/1.5/1.6 TDCI has been for the past 20 years.

The 2.0 EcoBlue is full Ford, that's why it has wetbelts and is less reliable.

With regards to diesel, Ford changed from 1.5 TDCi (8v) to 1.5 EcoBlue (16v) when the Mk4 Focus was released in 2018.

With regards to petrol, Ford changed from the old 1.5 EcoBoost (4 cylinder dry belt) to the new 1.5 EcoBoost (3 cylinder, chain, oilpump wetbelt) when the Mk4 Focus was released in 2018.  Very early Mk4 1.5 EcoBoost came with a gear driven oil pump, so no wetbelt, but that is not relevant when you are looking at a 2021 model.

A very useful summary of the 1.5 engines Tom. I'm sure it will be of help in avoiding confusion. 👍

Think you should do one on the 1.0 Ecoboom just for fun 🤣

Would you think it would be wort buying 2021 Ford Focus ST line with the 1.5 ego blue diesel I don't want to buy it and then regret it I'm not a mechanic but I'm paying a lot of money and I want to be sure all the help would be grateful thank you

So do you think the 1.5 Ecoblue is okay on the 2021 model

Considering all of the modern engines that Ford currently offer, it is probably the safest and most reliable option.

Can you tell me what way the 2021 model comes 1.5 eagle blue diesel much appreciated if you could tell me exactly which way it runs I'm not open engines but now a little bit

1.5 EcoBlue is dry timing belt & a small chain between camshafts.

No belt or chain needed for oil pump on these.

It landed on the moon many decades ago.

Cheers for this info as I've just bought a 2020 1.5 eco blue ST line estate and researching online there is lot of confusion and conflicting info regarding these engines as to belt issue. Put my mind at rest anyway. Thanks
