Key blade - how to use?

Featured Replies

Just been trying the key blade to unlock the drivers door on my 2020 Focus.

Anyway, I've tried turing it either way - towards the front it will turn maybe a quarter of a turn, and I can hear a clicking from the mechanism. Towards the rear of the car it only turns a tiny bit.

In neither case will the door unlock (if locked) or lock (if unlocked!). In both cases I have to remove the key before pulling the handle otherwise itwill only pull-out a small amount.

I am holding the key fob near the door while doing it.

What am I doing wrong?

PS My Ford dealership they will charge me £100-odd to run diagnostics, refundable if there's a warranty claim! So I don't want to do that of course!

From what you say, I'd be thinking the lock is partly seized up. Give the lock a good spray with WD40 and leave it for an hour to soak. Then work the key clockwise and anti-clockwise until it is able to move freely in both directions. With the key in the lock it should be able to turn anti-clockwise to the 9 o'clock position for unlock and it should be able to turn clockwise to the 3 o'clock position for lock. You don't need the keyfob when using the manual metal key in the lock barrel.

The only thing I would respectfully change, is the swapping of WD40 to a spray oil, like 3 in 1. WD40 is a solvent based lubricant, which over time as it doesn't contain any long lasting lubricant has the potential to make the lock stickier and gum up...

Are you using the keyblade stuck back in the fob?  You'll never have enough strength to turn it without.

The keyfob has a slot in it so you can use it as a 'handle' on the end of the emergency blade.

Thats it Tom, thanks. The fob doesn't hold the key very well so dropped it a couple of times! In common with my Mazda, when you use the key the alarm goes off until you turn on the ignition. Hope I never have to use the blade in practice, especially in the dark and especially especial if over a drain! It all feels very fragile as well.

ADDENDUM BTW have had another look at War and Peace - sorry, the owners Handbook - and can't find a reference to this method in it, nor on the online version. Another piece of info that should be there but isn't, like (accurate) info on how to reset the oil indicator, that I had to find for my self  via this forum and pass on to the main dealer!
