Mk4 1.5TDCI alternator change info please

Featured Replies

HI All.

newbie here, used to be one of the mondeo boys back in the day, then defected for a while, now back with a focus :0)

I have a 1.5 TDCI MK4 estate on a 19 plate, and I have to say, I love my car, except right now as it is broken.

a few weeks back I started to get some whine (through the auto gearbox?) mainly in sport mode. 2 days ago, I started to get a bit more of a clatter from the engine. got home and listened to everything with a broom handle, and by far the noisiest component was the alternator (sounds like a bearing has let go).

I'm not paying 600 quid for a new ford Item, as I'm only guessing right now, so I bought a second hand one from ebay (same part code). my dilemma now is the lack of info regarding the MK4. could anyone please point me in the direction of a workshop manual or 'how to' that could help me out on changing the alternator?

I'm seeing mixed reviews of the online haynes manual, so don't want to buy that and find its not really helpful.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated

Regards

Andy

little update, but talking to myself mainly 🙂

I bought the haynes online autofix manual last nigh to see if it would help, but it absolute twaddle.

apparently alternators can be removed from above or below, you need to disconnect the battery, and remove the drive belt. no pics of the actual car, not a patch on what they used to produce.

apparently its not for beginners, but people that are a little more experienced with cars, which begs the question as to why they need to tell an experienced diy mechanic that the alternator can sometimes be removed from the top of the engine, and sometimes from underneath? total waste of 26 Quid. save your money folks

That was my thought after buying the Mk2 manual 10 years ago...never bought another since!

Even the paper Haynes manuals have been pretty rubbish for years. I briefly considered buying the autofix manual for the Vitara but in the end decided it wasn't good value to spend out on something I could only access online.

At least with a paper manual they were useful for sticking under the workshop bench leg to keep it level 🤣
