Fiesta van 68 reg 1.5 diesel alternator replacement

Featured Replies

Can anybody advise if there are any tricks when it comes to replacing the alternator on 68 reg 1.5 turbo diesel Fiesta van please?
Full story is I'm trying to help a friend out by changing his faulty alternator for him. It's a Euro 6 so I'm guessing it's a Mk8. The engine cover states that it's a Duratorq engine but other than that I can't be any further specific with exact engine details.
This issue I'm having is getting at and undoing two of the 16mm that secure the alternator to it's mounting frame. It's the two on the inner mounts (nearest the turbo). Finally got at the top one but getting at the bottom bolt is a nightmare. I've unbolted the air con compressor under the alternator but can't remove the air con completely because I want to leave the pipes connected.
I'm beginning to wonder if Isomehow, I should be trying to unbolt the alternator mounting frame, and unbolt the alternator from the unbolted frame if that gives more space.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

i think I might have sussed how I should have gone about doing this job from the outset. After struggling to get the bottom turbo side alternator mount bolt to bit I moved onto the top mount bolt on the same side. This is when the collar fell out of mount bracket. From there I realised that the collar is tapered with an expanding slot. With that now realised, and then discovering the bolt head will go through the bracket mounted hole with the collar removed, I think I've found the error of my ways.
