Fiesta Ecoboost Vibrations

Featured Replies

I have a Fiesta Titanium 2021. Its the first time I have driven an Eco boost engine as my previous car was a 2006 Fiesta with a 1.4 engine. I am finding that I am getting some vibrations from the engine. Its normally around 1500 rpm. Its like the gear I am in is too high for the engine speed. But the gear indicator is telling me to shift up to that gear. If I am doing say 50 MPH in 5th it tells me to go to 6th, but then I find in 6th the vibrations start. Not bad vibrations, just a low frequency. If I then increase the speed to around 55 MPH its ok. As I say its almost like the gear is too high for the speed. Is this normal? Do other people experience this? I have no real reference as I never got this in my previous car, although that wasn't the Eco boost engine.

Hi Jon, frequently asked question. Usual answer is ignore the shift light and change up when you feel it is appropriate.

With my previous 1.0 ecoboost I would normally change up at 2,000 rpm or more, unless rolling downhill.

It can though, take a little time to get used to the feel of a 1.0 ecoboost.

Possibly cylinder deactivation. Try putting it in the sports drive mode or putting your foot down a bit harder to see if it stops.

Hi

Thanks for the replies. I am noticing the issue mainly when driving around 30 MPH. At higher speeds and hence higher RPM the motor is smooth. But at 30 the RPM is around 1500 and that is where I am seeing most of the vibration. Its not constant but just seems a bit unrefined compared to my previous Fiesta. Using Sport mode does seem to lessen the issue.

I thought the same. Sometimes it kind of sounds like the engine is lugging with some faint vibration, but it doesnt feel like it is. The car will still respond to acceleration fine( obviously not quite as well as if you are at a higher rpm), so im not sure if the engine is struggling or not cause its giving mixed signals haha. I have the 5 speed and I have to mostly change up at around 3k rpm to avoid the vibration/sound. I find the gearbox a bit akward in slower traffic uphill sometimes as it feels like its straggling between wanting to be in 1st gear and 2nd.

3 cylinder is not as refined as 4 that’s just how things are. Low revs will be worse.

Unfortunately you either get on with downsized 3 cylinder engines, or you don't, particularly if used to a larger 4 cylinder. Not sure exactly which engine you have, but the revised (chain cam drive) 125 or 155ps  versions from mid-2020 on are often considered to be less refined than the earlier (wet belt) engine which was still used in the 100ps version.

As already mentioned, changing up at higher revs and using 3rd at 30 mph would help.
