Strange DTC results with different systems

Featured Replies

Following replace ESR valve, upon getting all together, started up car (Focus mk2 2.0i 2007 Titanium)

Got several engine management error, steering, petrol pump, voltage, plus Limp mode, so took the car to local garage, drove ok, who checked out and reset DTC with Snap-On system

Drove from garage and next morning had similar problems, so back to garage (Normally excellent) again cleared DTC and returned home

Next day errors, so order the Forscan cable - vLinker FS USB, then looked at the log - still loads of errors, so copied and then reset the DTC with ForScan

That was over a week ago and driving ok, confused - is there a difference between DTC rest on expensive Snap-On system and Forscan combo

As there are extra pins in OBD port for Ford, is that why?

I have 40+ years in Computing & Ex Computer engineer and 50+ years of fixing cars, so this does not cause me issues, just wondered why the difference

OBD2 is a standardized system which all manufacturers must fit on European cars since the early 2000s.

However that's a very basic system.  Manufacturers then use many more specific codes on their own diagnostic system, separate from OBD2.

I meant to ask, I have a cheap £25 OD checker, which the garage showed there were still errors, that he cleared with the Snap-on tester.

So still had errors afterwards, yet ForScan DTC cleared, not only cleared all the codes, but also stopped the Engine light staying on & more particularly stayed off- that is what I strange that

The car has had several journeys and no errors showing up

So Forscan reaches parts other DTC clearing tools cant reach

I must not be the only focus lover to have this query?

Clearing the dtcs with Forscan etc would not resolve what caused them to be recorded in the first place. Usual clulprits include low voltage, instrument cluster solder and gem/BCM Fusebox corrosion behind the glovebox.

Probably first signs of the dreaded cluster soldering problem, or if you’re lucky, the battery is getting weak.

Yes.  This is why we always recommend Forscan on here.  There is no garage scanner that comes close, regardless of how many thousands are spent on it.  (Except Ford main dealer scanner)

As above.

Yes Forscan clears codes but it tells you what caused the codes so you can 'repair' the item.

Snap On Scanners are not very good - buy the latest £6k tool put it on my merc it can only talk to 39 of the 60 control modules - I have documented exactly which is missing (highlighting to them that worldwide a few of them are the most important an owner needs help with) even had snap on come round with merc dealer kit to steal the info they are missing and still four years on they added one missing module !!!!

Yet an Autel bit of kit you can buy for £150 will scan and clear all modules on the same car and can perform two resets on two different modules where Merc build in fake software switches to turn them off

most tools worth owning are single brand from 250 or multibrand from 600 quid, ODB2 only (aka most phone apps) are only good at finding 6 or 7, of the 16 mandatory emission related codes - thus miss circa 5000 fault codes across the entire car BM and Merc systems push out
