Steering wheel issue on mk4

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I have an issue with my 2019 1.0 Focus. Occasionally and only on low speeds my steering wheel gets very heavy and when I try to steer, the car vibrates. At first I didn't gave much attention to this issue, because it only lasted for a moment, only on low speeds and it happened rarely. But last week as I was driving in parking lot, looking for a spot I had to stop the car and the vibration was very intense. I googled it and I found out that it is a very known thing on mk4 Focuses but I couldn't find i solution. I booked a check at a Ford Service Center next week but I would be helpful if I had an idea on what is happening and what to expect. Thank in advance for your answers.

Check the voltage of your battery about one hour after parking. A low state of charge will cause heavy power steering and vibrations of the wheel.

You were correct. The battery had low voltage and it was replaced. A bit soon in my opinion since the car a 2019 model.

Here in the UK, myself included, we have found that many of the 2019 vehicles are needing there batteries replaced. The life expectancy of a car battery these days seems to only be between 3 and 4 years, since the technology is now "environmentally  friendly" unlike the nasty lead calcium batteries of 15 years ago.

It does of course mean that a vehicle will now require around 3 times more replacement batteries than it would otherwise have done so, if it was still using the older technology. 🤣

It's not so much what the battery is made from but the demands put on the battery on modern vehicles. The batteries are mainly just wearing out faster than older cars with fewer electronics.

As both the above, I changed mine yesterday on my 2019 car for a 75/700 amp one, the same as the guys above I believe.

It had not let me down yet but even with very long drives it struggled to get much above 60% State of Charge and as the weather has started to get colder I thought it would be sensible to do it now before I need my Heated Screen, Auxiliary Heater etc working in the mornings.

My car has just turned 4 years old and I have just purchased a new battery.

The original is still starting the car ok, but every day I am getting the Remote features disabled in the Ford App and my passenger side keyless entry has not worked for over a month.

Charged battery up on Thursday and only got 2 days before battery warning, so decided it was time to bite the bullet and get a new one.
