Mistyped I was looking in the handbook and cannot find the atf type

Hi Jim and welcome to the forum. I'm not familiar with your car. Is it an automatic or manual gearbox?

Hi thank you for the welcome I should have typed automatic gearbox

If you don't get an answer here I suggest you phone your local ford dealer. You'll definitely get some daft answers here unfortunately.

These gearboxes are sealed for life with no recommend oil change interval.  That is why Ford don't specify the fluid requirements.

Originally it would have been filled with Mercon V...but Ford did allow Mercon LV to be retrofilled later on, as used in later models.  (Your choice).

The filter costs around £100 from Ford.  And you'll need around 7 litres of fluid.

Thank you tazzmann and Tom for the replies,Tom do you think it would be beneficial,as I would like to change the fluid, but am a bit nervous that the new fluid would cause failure. This could could just be Internet rumours about transmissions failing after a change of fluid.

Hi Jim. Since Tom has stated the gearbox in your car is sealed for life that is a different kettle of fish.

OMG yes there are millions of fake information about changing or replenishing the oil. My personal experience is with Lexus. My previous car had a sealed for life gearbox. Other owners, who like you, were adamant to change the oil.

There are basically 2 methods or 3.

1 is drop the sump of the gearbox. Replace the filter and sump gasket. Measure what came out and put the same back in. With the Ford I'm unsure but with the Lexus there's a fill hole at the side of the gearbox halfway up behind a panel.

2 simply remove the drain plug. You should notice 2 plugs, well there are with Lexus. One is drain. The other is Level. This method only about 1 to 2 litres will come out but do that every now and then you'll replace all the oil.

3 contact a reputable gearbox specialist. I researched and found that there are machines that connect to the two flow pipes for the gearbox and flush it and put fresh oil in.

Maybe there are YouTube videos how to change the oil on your cars gearbox or at least a car with the same gearbox.

How many miles on your car. Are you experiencing issues with gear changes?

Oh. In the Lexus I previously had ( wish I still had it but it got written off unfortunately) I got the dealer to change some of the oil. The charged me for 2 litres so I know they simply dropped the sump plug method a couple of times.

Honestly, I wouldn't risk it unless you're having gearchange issues.  It's entirely your decision though.

As suggested above, you could contact a local transmission specialist to ask for a quote instead.  That should reduce any chance of DIY issues.

There is no drain plug on the Ford version of this gearbox.  (Fun fact, Mazda also use this gearbox, but they did fit a drain plug to their sump pan.)

Tom. Do you know then if this Ford version of the gearbox has a dip stick?

Who is the manufacturer of it and what's the model number?

It's 4F27E.  Joint venture between Mazda & Ford.  4 speed, torque converter.

It does have a dipstick.

Thanks Tom. Therefore with a dip stick a long tube vacuum pump can draw out old oil and new oil put in carefully.
