Improvising crankshaft oil seal tool?

Featured Replies

Any suggestions for improvising a tool to insert a new crankshaft oil seal on 1L Ecoboost? The Ford part is code 303-1603 and looking around my garage I can't find anything of quite the right diameter to suit (e.g. I've seen people talking about large sockets for oil seals but I've got nothing anywhere the 68mm or so I need). I'd have no issue getting the seal flush with the timing cover gently hammering using a piece of flat wood over the top but given the lip on the tool in the photo it looks like it is meant to sit slightly recessed? Or will flush suffice?

FWIW I simply used the Seal I removed. Worked fine, didn't get stuck, won't damage the new one.

To confirm, you sat the old one on top and just tapped it into place? Yeah I can see that'd work actually and allow the depth to be reached and with no direct impact to the new seal.

Yes exactly. I think I used the old Seal front face against the new Seal front face but I'm sure you'll work out which would be best.

As I say the old Seal won't go in so far that it'll become difficult to remove. The old Seal takes the impact. Just take a moment every so often to visually check the new Seal is going in square to the Casing surface.

Yeah I think face-to-face would ensure the load is evenly spread. I'll put a piece of wood in front of the old seal too and hammer on that. Thanks!

Massive thank you @RayC333 - your suggestion worked perfectly.

Whilst I was hoping someone might come up with something suitable that I might happen to have in the garage never did I expect that it was going to be something sat right in front of me! 😂

Hi mate,

Could you explain how you done the above? Its my first time doing one of these.

I am assuming the below:

Engine side timing cover was not taken off.

Friction washer was added.

New seal was put in by hand, then using the old seal it was placed in front of it, using the piece of wood you hammered it from behind in the middle.

How did you know when to stop, when it was flush with the cover?

Many thanks

I wouldn't fit the friction washer until you are ready to fit the pulley. The last thing you want is for it to get knocked off and land int he sump!

I noticed the original sat slightly (1mm or so) recessed and looking at the official tool it does have a slight lip to it to achieve that. So, I'd aim for that. I think there's a backstop anyway so I doubt you could push it too far in
