Hello.

Does anyone have any ideas on why my alternator is not working properly?

I have a Galaxy mk 3 2.0 tdci 2011 model. 

I have replaced the voltage regulator because the old one was kind of used up. When I replaced the regulator with a new one and connect the battery i do get sparks and smoke from the alternator. 

I have not connected the battery on wrong since I haven't removed the battery from the car. Only disconnected the positive lead when replacing the regulator. 

Can it be the alternator it self that is gone bad? Thinking of, perhaps the diodes or something like that internally?

Any suggestions. Getting kind of desperate. 

Any help is much appreciated.
