Mk2 Removing rear door window winder handles

Featured Replies

My Mk2 LX has manual rear windows.

The winder handles must be removed in order to remove the rear door cards.

As far as I know, the handles are held on by a plastic spring clip which fits into a groove on the splined shaft.

Once the handle is pushed on, this clip locks into the groove.

There is a plastic ring under the handle which leaves no obvious way to access the clip.

Is there a trick for removing the handle without breaking it?

Yes you remove them by placing a long reach small hook under the handle until you touch the shaft. then slowly rotate the handle and the hook will catch on the spring clip. Once you have hooked it the just pull and the clip comes off. It's quite easy once you know how it works.

You can make a hook from a strong paperclip that has been straightened out. Use a pair of pliers to bend the end of paperclip and make like an "L" shape hook which is between 1 and 2mm long.

This gives you the general idea (sorry the guy just goes on a bit).

Thanks, I will have to try that.

I use the edge of an old rag and put it between the winder handle and the distance ring. Then i drag the rag in the crack (wow🙈😂😂) until I press down the clip and it pops out. When fitting back the handle just put the clip on the handle prior to install and press it on the axle. Be sure to wind it all up so the handles stays in the same place on both left and right hand side.
