Cold limp mode

Featured Replies

Hi all, I’ve done a quick search and can’t find anything close enough to my problem.

i have a 2014 1.6tdci focus that now it’s cold when I go to put my foot down it flashes engine service now on the screen and goes into limp mode, quick turn off and on again and the cars back to normal but now it’s doing it more frequently. I’ve got a basic code reader that’s normally pretty good but it’s not getting any codes from the car so I’m pretty stumped. Any ideas where to start looking would be very much appreciated.
Ta Jamie.

Hi Jamie. Your code reader isn't much good for Ford's. With a Windows laptop download FORScan. It's the next best diagnostic tool after what Ford use. You'll need an OBD lead too. After you've done that only then will you be able to scan your car to see what's up.

Unofix will hopefully be along soon and provide links to what you need and also give advice too.

I'm here 🤣

FORScan: https://forscan.org/download.html

vLinker FS cable:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

Generic code readers very rarely read Ford specific DTC's. Also Ford use two Canbus systems which are a High Speed and a Medium Speed. Not all code readers can switch between the two speeds.

Quick update, I got the forscan reader and got a couple of codes from it

P228C and P2291 which both looked to be something to do with an injector. I googled both again and found a video which the guy was having the same issues and the same codes and he changed the fuel filter and sorted it. I got round to changing mine last night even though it was replaced by kwikfit in 2022 and only done about 8000 miles since. I did however find what the problem was. Kwikfit didn’t bother to remove the existing seal around the tile of the filter and just squashed the new one and the old one together, it must have been leaking and drawing in air all the time which was making my focus run naff for so long!!

I’ve added a pic so you can laugh at kwikfit incompetence.
I will also say I don’t use them anymore either since they lost my locking wheel nut key and I had so much trouble in them getting a replacement set of wheel nuts!

You know what Jamie it's a good job you've got that photo.

Send it to kwikfit head office with a complaint in the lines off incompetence of the branch and causing you unnecessary stress and expense in finding the issue and after a number of months finally finding the cure to your cars problem.
