More Mk4 battery issues

Featured Replies

Hi all, sorry to start yet another topic about this issue but it seems a lot of the other posts have some sort of resolution where I don't. 😞 Hoping for something we haven't thought of...

Background: 2021 Focus Titanium mk4, surplus fleet vehicle that we bought last year at 18 months old practically brand new mileage-wise. It had been sat in storage unused the whole time so we've had battery issues from the start as a result. Dealer charged it, all went well for a couple of months then back to square one. It's been back several times only for them to find nothing wrong and spin the usual "you're not driving it enough" rubbish. Right, well, I've tried that, done daily motorway trips over the summer but no difference, after a few weeks it'll be back to half the features turning off and Ford Connect saying the car's in deep sleep again.

At the moment it's mainly doing daily local trips but that is seeing the car on the charger every couple of days - I can get a maximum of a week out of it at the moment. A full charge should surely last longer than that even on a completely unused car... Ford apparently don't think so and said that's normal. My neighbour has the mk4.5 and only uses it once a week to go shopping, he's not had any of these issues (yet? 😬).

So, car's back in with Ford on Friday. It's still under warranty but they've pretty much said they're not going to replace the battery and that it's my problem. And judging from the posts on here I'm not even sure a new battery would solve the problem.

Those of you who have had this issue: Is there anything else I need to be getting them to look at or alternatively getting them not to waste their time with? They've already said there's nothing abnormally draining the battery and everything's fine but honestly so fed up, got rid of my old car due to lots of electrical issues but seems like that's nothing compared to this.

Once a lead acid battery has been deep discharged and left for a period in a deep discharged state it will never recover.  My first action would be to fit a new battery!

I had to get a new battery last winter (battery was coming up to 4 years old and died) but, to be honest, from about 6 months old the car started turning systems off to preserve the battery. Anyway, new battery installed just over a year ago, stop-start manually turned off everytime I start the car since fitting the new battery and all seems well so far.

Update to this - Ford replaced the battery under warranty after finally accepting that it was faulty from the start, took them long enough to acknowledge this but perhaps the fact that I provided several weeks worth of voltage readings and results from my own tests got them to admit that perhaps I'd been right all along. They also fitted a 70Ah one (up from the 65Ah one in there before - I think? Could possibly have been 60Ah but tbh I don't remember now) which I think I've seen on other threads is a better fit for this car. Was nice to finally have quickclear working and some heating as well! We'll see how long this lasts, sadly from other threads I'm not optimistic this will fully solve the quick discharge issue but I'm happy enough that they resolved it all under warranty. I was also finally able to update sync3 which I hope also improves a few things.
