Rust forming on paintwork on sill.

Featured Replies

Is it worth going somewhere to get this done and estimated cost as I assume it will spread, the rest of the car looks fine and I am planning on keeping it as long as possible. Or is it a lost cause and is it liklley its already spread and I just cant see.  I could try to do it myself but I dont have much time and I want to make sure its dealt with properly.  You can see the paint bubbling and some rust underneath that. image.thumb.jpeg.a64f92c69d440323993689e5f1ee11f4.jpeg

It'll definitely be worse inside than it looks from outside.  But if you're planning on keeping it long term, it would be best to get it sorted as soon as possible.

Difficult to estimate the cost but for a very rough ball park I'd suggest around £200.

Alright thanks, didnt think it would cost that much, thought it would of just needed sanding down and coated with something, doesnt need to be cosmetically perfect as its not really visible from a normal angle, but yeah I suppose it will be worse underneath

no no I know, I just thought cause its a smallish area and Im not too bothered about the cosmetics as its facing down it could be done as a cheaper patch job just to get rid of  the rust and stop it spreading

Did you read the post I linked in my last one?

I'd press the badly rusted area hard with your thumb!
I've seen a few where there is rot there ......gulp 🥵

If your thumb doesn't go in and it looks and feels solid, then give it a blast with a wire brush attached to the angle grinder, whip all the rust off to bare metal, keep in in the flat angled section if possible and try not to go on the upper side of the sill, then etch prime the area, wet flat the primer, then the base coat & lacquer, easy fix really, just cost you your time and a large can of etch primer & wet/dry paper & base coat & lacquer.

This time of year isn't great for DIY painting though.

Yeah I was thinking of trying it myself but but I dont really have the space, confidence or a lot of time really, plus like you said the weather is crap. I went to a recommended local garage that does body work, he had a look at it and he rekons it wont spread but will go into a hole but not for years, said if I want it done he could bast it all out and treat it for about £100

That's a good price, most 'bdyshop' men won't don a boiler suit on for that LOL

Get on it pal, rot won't take long in reality, prevention is better than a cure....Welding 🥴
