Creaking when turning steering wheel

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, I've recently bought a 2012 Focus Ecoboost and have noticed there is a sort of groaning noise coming from the front when the steering is turned. It groans when turning left and right. There are no clonks or bangs from the front end. Is this a common problem and is it easy to resolve?
Thanks

Can you be any more specific than 'the front'?

If it's inside it's probably the steering column bearing.  Nothing you can really do about that one, just put up with it.

If it's high up on one side, it's probably one of the suspension top mount bearings failing.  Fairly easy fix at a garage.  The need for spring compressors makes it a less desirable DIY job.

If it's low down at the back of the engine bay, it could be the steering rack on it's last legs - common issue on Mk3's but not cheap to replace so hopefully not that.

Thanks, the noise seems to come from the steering wheel. It’s not notchy but does not feel smooth when the steering wheel is turned. I think I need to get the car to a garage.
