Turbo oil leak

Featured Replies

Greetings,

I recently bought a mk2 focus 1.6 tdci and when changing oil filter i noticed that there is oil in the turbo. Is this something i should worry about, what is the cause and is it even worth repairing?

For any advice and answer I thank you in advance.

Also leaking here, maybe it has something to do with it?

Oil in the turbo intake generally comes from the oil breather pipe and isn't a problem.  But I must admit that looks a lot more than usual.  The turbo oil seal may also be leaking.

The oil breather itself is definitely leaking as seen in your second picture.

The plastic boost pipe on top of the turbo also appears to have a slight leak.

Overall, it just looks quite 'tired' and showing it's age.  If it's just an A to B car, I wouldn't worry about it.

If you do want to repair it, a new oil breather pipe will be required.  A new seal/o-ring for the top boost pipe.  And you may wish to replace the gauze filter in the top of the cam cover, as that should restrict the amount of oil passing into the breather pipe.  It should really just be very fine oil mist being sucked into the intake.
