Ford Focus Mk2 - 1.6TDCI - P0299 Fault - Engine Malfunction

Featured Replies

Hi.

I own a 2011 Mk2 Focus - 1.6 TDCI engine.

I'm currently having problems when accelerating hard or when climbing hills. The car will enter limp mode and an Engine Malfunction light appears of the dash. If I turn the car off and on, it will reset and drive normally again.

Current DTC codes; P0299 and P0490.

The issue first started around March of this year, but then went away in April and only came back a few weeks ago.

I had a look through the forums initially and have since replaced the solenoid valve at the back of the engine and have also replaced the fuel filter. This has made a slight difference, but the fault still remains. The car was serviced recently, so it has had a new air filter as well. I have checked the air intake, I could not see any damage/splits, but it is quite dirty with oil - not sure if this is coming from the PCV valve/pipe and if this could be causing the issue?

I had a feel around the intercooler hoses and couldn't feel any damage to these either.

I have purchased a Vgate vLinker and downloaded Forscan, but I'm not sure what data I should be running to help identify the potential problem.

Any suggestions/advice about where I should look next would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

P0490 is for the EGR valve.  Chances are that'll need replacing.

P0299 can really only be a boost leak in pipes or intercooler unless the turbo itself is worn out or the vanes are stuck open.

It's not clear where the oil in your picture has come from.  A bit of crank breather leak is normal on these.

Only odd thing in your pic is the intake pipe.  The concertina shouldn't be touching itself like that.  Looks like the reducer on the turbo has slipped out a bit.  Won't directly cause your issue but could be putting extra strain on the breather pipe.

Thanks for the response.

For P0490, FORScan is advising not to replace the EGR as "DTC P042E or P042F" is not showing, and to do further diagnosis.

Could P0299 be caused by the MAP or MAF sensor, or would there also be a code presented for these if they are faulty?

The oil seems to be coming from the PCV valve, but i'm not certain. It could be coming from the PCV pipe and spreading from there.

I will have a look at intake pipe tomorrow and see if it leads to anything. I'm a complete novice at this stuff, so appreciate the help.

Here is some live data from FORScan, as the fault occurred. Not sure if this shows anything, as nothing is jumping out at me.

The P0490 code seems to have gone as well.

That is odd.  It starts boosting fine (27psi max) but then seems a bit weak on the last acceleration before it drops into limp mode.  It doesn't look excessively low compared to the MAF though.  I'd expect a split boost pipe to show up as a bigger discrepancy between MAF & MAP.

That suggests it may be a turbo control issue instead.  As you've already replaced the vac actuator, I wonder if the vac pipe to the actuator is slightly loose or damaged so it can't hold vac pressure over a prolonged time.  That's where I'd be checking next anyway.

Appreciate the response.

I will have a look at this as well. Hopefully that's where the issue lies.

Hi DCFX, did you ever solve this problem? I've got a similar issue, P1103 (MAF) and P0299 (over/underboost) on hard acceleration above 40mph in 3rd/4th/5th. Problem is "fixed" by key off / key on but cause is perfectly repeatable. Replaced the MAF, P1103 refuses to go away though but it was an eBay special, kept the original part just in case, and I've just ordered a new boost solenoid this morning so am going to try that next when I can get hold of my neighbours ramps. Read above replacing the solenoid didn't immediately help you, but was there simply a vac pipe loose as suggested as there was no end posted?

My theory goes that the turbo works fine up to ~40mph, so it surely can't be goosed (I can hear it spooling and it pulls hard until it doesn't), otherwise it wouldn't work at any rev range, therefore it has got to be a vacuum leak or other supporting function somewhere. I'm replacing the easy bits and if that doesn't fix it will be going to the garage, hopefully they can smoke test it to find any leaks rather than pulling the entire engine bay apart looking for it
