Steering

Featured Replies

Hi all,

New to the focus and second post here! My last post was full of questions and you lot were VERY helpful in answering them, so thank you. I've come out of a Volvo XC40 with very light steering and I've noticed the Focus (2019 ST Line X) has really quite heavy steering in comparison. My previous post featured a question surrounding adjusting the steering sensitivity which I'm told is not possible, so it got me wondering .. could there be something wrong with the steering in mine? I've been watching lots of videos online of people test driving the same model as mine and no one seems to be having issues with the steering, but mine is definitely the heaviest I've ever had. Could it be the big old alloys and low profile tyres? I'm sure this model has the electric assisted power steering right? Perhaps there's a fault with that? Is there anything I can personally do to check fluid levels / fuses etc? Don't get me wrong, it's not rock solid like the old days before power steering but it's certainly not light either. I'm perplexed at this and I've only had the car 3 days. Other than that, I literally adore it! Especially starting it from the app - which I don't think I'll ever get bored of 🙂

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

B

The power steering is an electric motor, there is no fluid to check. If the power steering is not working you should get a message in the drivers display. When mine temporarily failed after a flat battery I literally couldn’t steer at low speed.

Have you checked tyre pressures? Usually a stiff steering rack will not self centre but I think you’ve experienced the opposite? The stickiness of the tyres can have some effect. My car feels very heavy compared to my mums kuga. But I only notice when I drive hers and get back in to mine.

If you’re worried about it. Just find another mk4 focus for sale to test drive.
