It is a UK and European legal requirement that cars from ~2013 onwards must have a working TPMS. It is part of the UK MOT test, so no Ford can't disable it.

I imagine Forscan can probably disable it, and a disabled system won't illuminate the warning lamp hence not cause any issues with an MOT.

Forscan can disable it if you have an extended licence which the trial version is free.

I would expect that FORScan can quite possibly disable the TPMS.

There is of course the small issue that deliberately and knowingly disabling safety systems, which is after all what TPMS is, will invalidate the insurance. Depending how observant the MOT tester is, and that varries quite a lot, it would still fail the MOT if it is noticed that the TPMS light does not illuminate during the self test sequence when the ignition is turned on.

My original reply still stands, Ford will not disable it. The OP can choose to have it disabled, but should at least be aware of the points I've mentioned.

guys thank you for your replys but how many times do I have to put with it and keep taking it back to the dealership... merry christmas

Forscan has options for 2 types of tpms an abs based one and a wheel sensor based one it may be possible to disable the wheel system and enable the abs based system possibly? If it works the tpms warnings would still function. I've never tried it but if successful the system would be working again without cost.

Would a mk8 have the ABS based system though? The mk7.5 does as tpms wasn’t mandatory when it came out.

Merry Christmas.

Your car does have individual TPMS sensors, one fitted in each wheel. It is possible that you just have one sensor that is intermittently faulty. Do you know if it is always the same wheel that triggers the low pressure warning ?

For around £95 you can have all of the sensors changed. Given that you say that you have had multiple problems, I personally would just bite the bullet and get them changed. If the problem reoccurs then it has to be an issue with one of the wheel receivers.

Though it makes no difference to the response to the OP, I think the actual implementation date was any new car sold from 1 November 2014. Our 64 plate SEAT Mii doesn't have it and was pre-registered just before that to avoid the rule.

New car probably means a new car off the drawing board, new to production, not an established model.

It would have been from the cars build date, not it’s sale or registration date which can be weeks/months after.

Like everything governments do, things are never straight forward or easy to interpret.

In short a car that gained official government 'Type Approval' up until 31st October 2012 did not require it to be built with any kind of tyre pressure monitoring system. Cars that were granted 'Type Approval' from 1st November 2012 had to be designed with TPMS.

This means that it was quite legal to continue building vehicles without TPMS after the 1st Nov 2012, provided that Type Approval had been granted before that date.

This allowed a period of grace for older designed models to continue to be produced without the need to modify and introduce TPMS on an already Type Approved vehicle. However, this was brought to a close when it was decided by the government that all vehicles 'Registered' after 1st November 2014 must be fitted with a TPMS system. This applied regardless of the date of when Type Approval had been granted, and regardless of when the vehicle was built. As a result of this, there were a number of new, but older type approved vehicles hastily registered before the deadline date. Otherwise they would have needed to be retrospectively fitted with TPMS, and gain type approval in order for them to have been registered in the UK, something that would have not been cost effective.

Mine is really strange. When I first bought the car it would beep for the rear offside tyre when it dropped by 1 PSI. Since about 2 weeks it has stopped beeping even though the pressure dropped by 3 PSI.

I don’t know if the is a valve leak on the rear off side or a slow puncture. I will get it checked soon.

The icing on the cake is that I had the same problem on the rear offside tyre on Seat Leon. My wife blames the driver.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Yes, sometimes it's "vehicles built after" as Mark mentions above, and sometimes, as in this case, it's "registered after". Plus the further complication of "periods of grace" as you mention.

I suspect GSR 2 (which already applied to completely new models launched from July 2022) will cause similar confusion when it comes into force for already existing models in 2024. I've seen 7 July mentioned which I assume will mean registrations as "manufacturers will be able to obtain approvals from 1 January."

Only good thing is there can be some pre-reg bargains as we got in 2014!
