2 niggles

Featured Replies

Hello all

I bought a 2017 1 litre Eco-Boost Fiesta about 5 weeks ago. After over a decade of Citroens I’m impressed with it but there are a couple of niggles

1.       The gear box is a bit weird. Sometimes changing gears is fine with the stick moving through the gates with ease. Other times the change seems a bit “spongy” with there being some resistance to moving between gears. Where I can, I go into neutral, wiggle the stick a bit and the change into the required gear is fine.  What’s the likely problem there?

2.       The temperature gauge has blue “blobs” running from left to right as the  engine temperature increases. Nearly all my driving so far has been short local journeys ( 5  miles max) in about 12 to 15 degrees outside temperature ( we’re in Cornwall) with a couple of longer trips of about 15 miles each way. The temperature gauge hardly registers at all. Where it does I only get “one blob or 2 blobs maximum” and this is at the end of a journey just as I’m turning off the engine. Have read on other forums about sticky thermostats staying open and damaged temperature sensors being a possible cause. Some folk have said that this might just be down to warm (for winter) driving conditions. What are people’s thoughts? What would the likely effect of this be on the engine over time?

Cheers all

Hi,

Could we just confirm which generation Fiesta you have as 2017 was a changeover year between Mk 7.5 and Mk 8?

I assume from your description of the temperature gauge that it is a Mk 7.5 and has a 5 speed gearbox?

The Ecoboost normally warms up quickly. Previous thread on this issue here:

https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/125144-eco-boost-not-reaching-optimum-running-temperature/

The Mk 7.5 has known issues with the 5 speed box, Could also be a clutch cylinder issue - does "pumping" the clutch make any difference?

Just wondering if this was a dealer or private purchase. If the former, I'd suggest raising the issues with them. Quick guide to rights here:

Thanks for this...The date of first registration was 31 1 2017 so I guess its a Mark 7.5? Yes its a 5 speed box. It was a dealer purchase. I was not aware of these faults when purchasing. What are my chances of an easy and hassle free repair?

Will try pumping the clutch when I use the car again  tomorrow and get back to you. The cabin of the car seems to heat fairly quickly ( that said its been quite warm here of late so the heater hasn't had to work too hard)

Thanks again...

Only one way to find out, but that will depend on the attitude/reputation of the dealer, the exact circumstances of the sale, what representations were made about the vehicle, any warranty given (which is in addition to your consumer rights), etc.

As a general comment, the longer you leave it the easier it is for the dealer to argue the fault was not present at sale, but is due to misuse/wear and tear etc. You have already lost the right to a refund within 30 days of purchase.

If it has an electric auxiliary heater the quick cabin heating might be down to that.

As mentioned above already the heater seems OK in terms of output but it hasn’t had too much to do of late because although it’s been wet, it’s been mild here. Pumping the clutch helps a little with the gear changes but no more than wiggling the gear stick which I’ve done before. There was mentioned in the thread on the link you sent to me that turning off the aircon makes a bit of a difference and that does seem to encourage the temp gauge to move a bit but not as much as you should expect

It'll almost certainly be a stuck (open) thermostat - a very common problem on these engines.
