Focus Mk4 Turbo/Actuator issues

Featured Replies

Hello all HNY,

I have had an intermittent issue with no power over the last 5 months which results in an EML for fault codes P00046 and P00047.

One independent garage cleaned the DPF which fixed it for 3-4 weeks but then the issue returned, so I put it into the Ford dealer for assessment.

The dealer has just phoned to say that the actuator is seized and that the only way to replace it is to also replace the turbo as it is one unit.

Quoted me £1800 all in.  Does this seem right?

Car is a 2019 Mk4 Ford Focus Diesel Estate 2.0 Ecoblue.

Annoyed to say the least, its only done 45k and I regularly drive on the motorway with very little short journeys.

Is the actuator blocking a common issue with these?  Is there any way to avoid it once its fixed?

Half tempted to sell after its fixed and cut my losses.

Thanks

Paul

Hi,

You can buy a used turbo complete for around £300 on eBay.  There are also separate actuators available for around £100.

Ford dealerships are only allowed to source and fit genuine new parts.  So they are correct that the only option for them is to fit a complete new turbo & actuator unit.  That is not necessarily the only option for you.

Can't remember anyone else having this issue on the Focus EcoBlue so far.  So it's probably not common.  But VNT mechanisms get clogged and electronic actuators do break often on turbos of all makes.

As for avoiding in future, use decent quality fuel to reduce soot levels in the exhaust and make the turbo 'work' regularly to keep the vanes clear.  Motorway cruising doesn't get the VNT vanes moving like a B-road blast does.
