How to reset Engine malfunction warning?

Featured Replies

The car (belonging to my son) is a 2011 Focus 1.6 Petrol auto with keyless start.

He recently had an engine failure (cambelt/timing).  I have sourced another same code engine (SHDC) and mated it to the existing transmission and fitted it in his car.  The car runs in limited performance mode and has the Engine Malfunction warning illuminated.  The engine and gearbox are running quietly.  How can I reset the warning light?  I Have seen videos where both the brake and accelerator are depressed for about 30 seconds with the key in position 2.  This car has keyless start so the has only 2 positions  - ON (position 1 or auxiliary power) and START.  Depressing both pedals in ON does nothing and in the START mode will start the engine.

Would I be better off using  a tool like FORSCAN?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Jim

No clue about the key(less) procedure - I think it might only reset the oil service interval etc, doesn't it? Not sure you can erase DTCs & reset the limp mode with such a procedure?

But regarding Forscan - absolutely! It's a marvellous tool, considering it's free, for the most part of it!

100% you need to use forscan and a cheap cable that has a high speed/ medium speed can switch, if you look at forscan's website they have recommended cables for this

The recommended FORScan cable:

vLinker FS: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

OR, the old recommended cable (not suitable for vehicles 2013 onwards):

Yep. Get the codes read, clear the codes that will go away, fix the codes that won't.

You've probably left something disconnected, not fully connected or damaged a wire

Thanks very much for all the feedback. I have downloaded Forscan and used the tool. It pinpointed the ETB or its connections as the issue.  It turned out that I hadn’t reconnected the supply lead properly. Doh.
