Pink/brown sludge in tank

Featured Replies

Guys can you help please?

pink/brown sludge in the coolant reservoir, filled the tank back up and now it’s below the line again. When I stop sometimes the car is really loud and the heaters won’t heat up. car is 1l eco boost 2013 Ford focus.

any ideas at all what it could be ?
TIA

Would start with a CO2 sniff test to check whether there's any exhaust gas in the coolant.

Have you used Radweld or similar?

I once tried it on my 1.0 Ecoboost and had similar coloured sludge (and some time later solids) in the expansion tank, radiator, block, head and heater matrix.

My guess was that air/gas was getting into the cooling system and the Radweld was reacting with that. Normally these compounds work by meeting the open air out of a small leak before it goes solid.

I later found a crack between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head coolant passage.

Has this only started to happen since you had the wet timing belt replaced ?
