Here's a dilemma I'm in. Cars exhibiting a smallish amount of white fumes from the exhaust and has a rough idle. It's a new engine as per previous posts on this forum. 

Not losing coolant, no milky appearance and oil all looks good. I had it running today for 30 mins to make sure it wasn't condensation and it stalled after 30 mins. Never done this before.

Does this point towards dodgy fuel injectors? 

Engine report on the warranty replaced engine did pick up a very small amount of fuel in the oil.

Any sure ways to rule out either way?

The engine on the latest generation Fords does switch off after a long period of inactivity.

That's correct Tom. I have mine set to turn off after 20 minutes, it is adjustable either in the Sync3 menu or in the Ford Pass App, I can't remember now.

Oh ok, that's news to me. So back to diagnosing the white smoke for me then. 

Any suggestions on the small amount of fuel in oil?

White smoke is probably just steam.  And a small amount of fuel in the oil is normal.  Worse still if you're idling a cold engine for ages.  The engine needs to be warmed up as quickly as possible.  When cold, the piston rings won't be fully sealed allowing more gas/fuel to pass them as blowby.  And fuel only burns efficiently when atomised into tiny particles, some of this fuel immediately condenses on the walls of the cylinder when the engine is cold.  So you have to inject more fuel to keep the engine running at the correct AFR.  The 'lost' fuel that sticks to cylinder walls will end up in both the oil and the exhaust.

TL:DR - Drive it, don't idle it! :biggrin:

Taken it for a long drive (60 mins) today getting up to motorway speeds. Still have white smoke from exhaust and the same coming from the turbo casing under the bonet after this drive.  Idle is rough and sitting at 1100 RPM with the AC off, turning the AC on doesn't change this.

I've done a combustion leak detection test which did not show any combustion gases.

Any thoughts?

First thought is to sell it and buy something else, but I guess that's not the type of thought you're after.

A bit of steam in the exhaust is normal.  Especially now when it's so cold and damp.  I really wouldn't read too much into that at the moment.

There shouldn't be a leak around the turbo though.  If that is exhaust it will contain carbon monoxide as it's leaking before the cat.  Really don't want to be breathing that in the cabin.  It could also be giving the lambda sensor false readings which may affect the idle.  The source of that leak should be found asap.

Difficult to know what else to suggest for the idle as there are so many things it could be.  Did you ever get Forscan?  Checking for Ford specific fault codes would be ideal for this.

Also can't remember if you had a brand new high pressure fuel pump fitted with your new engine?  If not, they are a common cause of fuel leaking into the oil and the fluctuating fuel pressure can cause a rough idle.  They are too expensive to replace just on a whim though.

Trying to sell the car at the moment. CAZOO is giving me the best price but don't want them giving me a hard time over any faults etc so don't mind spending a little bit. Not a fan of selling this privately due to the issues i've had.

I don't have forscan but might be worth it as I now have an MK4 Focus from work.

I didn't bother with the high-pressure fuel pump but did see a used one on Ebay for £60.

I have to fix a brake caliper issue this week. Grinding when turning in just one direction, but as soon as that's fixed I'll try my luck with selling it.

AFAIK most online car buyers check the dashboard for warning lights and then do a ten yard test drive (forwards and back).
