2013 Fiesta grinding from top/back engine when start

Featured Replies

My dads 2013 Fiesta was having battery problems, so I changed the alternator and battery. When changing the alt, I snapped the overflow radiator line, replaced that and added coolant, then I turned the key, seen the oil low light was on, I topped off the oil, and tried to start it. I now am hearing a grinding noise from what sounds like the top/back of the engine and the car won't turn over. When he drove it to my house, it was running perfectly fine. There was never an over heating issue. Just wondering what could be causing this, it doesn't sound like it's coming from where the starter is, more like directly on top of the engine, and it's a little scary. I posted on reddit, with a video, here is the link.

I don't know how to tell the difference

Then I think you need a mechanic if you don't know what engine it is.

Can we have your Car reg number? this will allow us to find the engine type?

Not recommended on a public forum.

3 cyl 1.0 ecoboost is the most common engine. If it has 3 spark plugs and looks similar to the pic below, that's what it is:

I often wondered what an 'unexploded' ecoboost engine looked like 🤣

Having looked and listened to the Reddit clip I don't immediately recognise it as a 1.0 Ecoboost engine.

Need a better photo. In any case the mechanical sound seems serious. I would have thought it's unrelated to the work declared.

Do we know what 2013 Fiesta has a 'low oil light' and key start? My 2012 Focus doesn't.

Lol, I can't see the engine at all from that angle!

I'm going to say none. I suspect it's a case of the oil pressure light being thought of as some kind of oil level light.
