Focus MK3 2011 (Manual Petrol) not starting, can be hotwired

Featured Replies

The engine wont crank or click when the key is turned all the way to Start position:

  • First thought was to check the battery; That's fine.
  • The starter motor works (As we hotwired the relay and it starts to crank)
  • We confirmed the ignition switch and associated relays work because the fuel pump engages when the key is turned to Start position and the relays click.
  • We confirmed the engine actually starts and runs by turning the ignition key and hotwiring the starter relay, the engine then starts fine (Although seems to be running rich). We guess there's no feedback to the ECM that the engine started.

In further testing we found that the signal voltage to the start motor relay is not appearing. (The start motor relay does not click when ignition is Start). Replaced the starter fuses and Relay but still not starting. Do we have to do a reset, or is there something else missing or wrong?

Using this image, how can we check the voltages of the starter motor relay and what should we expect to see? Same for the ignition relay.

Edit: I got reminded that I have no control over the lights, indicators, hibeams, dips etc when the key is in the on position. I can't turn any of them on. And my dipped headlights also turn on when in the key is in 2nd position even though they are switched off at the dial/switch. (I don't have daytime running lights and they never did that before). This would make me assume there's a ground fault possibly?

Replying to say I JUST found the fix after 3 days of hunting, and getting really deep in to checking relays. One side of the coils were energising, meaning it wasn't getting a signal from the BMS. I just checked the BMS fuse box under the glove box and this blue latch-socket was loose just enough, it popped back in its socket when I pushed on the terminals. Guess it got kicked at one point and eventually wiggled free to start causing issues.

Do have to reset the BMS though by unplugging the Positive terminal from the battery for 10 minutes and everything was working again. I also pushed all the other terminals in hard just incase after.
