Headlamp replacement query...

Featured Replies

My drivers headlamp could do with replacing, as it is undergoing conversion to a goldfish bowl. There are 100s listed on Ebay with an advantage of having an old car, prices are just £20/£30. After reading quite a few listings, none mention the 'leveling' function of the headlamp. Is this actually built into the unit, or is it an external motor which lifts the whole headlamp unit up/down (yes, I know, it's probably a stupid question!)

The levelling motor is separate on these lights, but it's underneath the bulb cover so will usually be sold complete with the headlight cluster.

The silver reflector is moved up & down inside the cluster to change the beam angle.

careful

lots of designs, your pic is the early silver one - later 57 plate on cars had black lights - on her later one the leveling is all inside the lamp unit

and of course you want halogen ones - are we sure electrical level sensing wasn't higher spec cars too ?

FYI just take it inside put in the airing cupboard for the night and will be like new ... its just miserable weather we have

I intend to keep original as a spare, and will Gorilla seal around it just in case...

That seems very good value. 👍

Did you not fancy upgrading to full active LED headlights ? Very reasonable at only £1100 each 🤣🤣

That's the advantage of owning a 'vintage' car 🤣

hey anyone remember me mentioning the silly bulb failure that's so common - and my insinuation its a voltage spike during cranking.  Well the spike is seen during start up when you fit LEDs (as they response fast enough to show it...)

Now the point, my BMW motorbike does exactly the same thing - then often throws the bulb failure warning light - discussing the stupidity with my brother, he thinks the spike is a bulb circuit test - which begs if they fitted it why didn't they use it on the Focus ?

And also drives me in thinking why the BM throws its teddies on LEDs as they're not dragging enough current.  Yet magically a Merc car does all this without the flash and without the errors.  So where all these issues on BMWs with error free canbus drivel that never works - seems to be because they only used a budget nasty way of working and not the magic the Merc uses.

My replacement headlamp arrived today, even better condition than I thought, not a mark on it, and for £22 inc postage, a real bargain. However, Yodel didn't cover themselves in glory - distribution center is 10 minutes away, they were driving round 3 days looking for me 🤣
