Mk2.5 1.6 TDCi loss of power over 3000 revs

Hi All,

I live in the London ULEZ zone, so sadly will be getting rid of this car - most likely scraping it. 😞 Which I am very sad about as really like the car and apart from the last 12 months where it had a fuel cap sensor go and a new alternator (but no new battery). It has been good after the DPF issues, DPF replaced.  Done 102,000 miles now, owned it from new, so will be very sad to see it go.... My first car at this age/milage was falling apart but not this one.

I was driving this recently and when I got on the motorway revved to go up to 70 and after a min the engine just died, revs dropped and no response when accelerating . So Pulled over to the hard shoulder. Waited a few mins. Then started it up - started fine then pulled of gently.  Then when going over about 3000 revs the engine started to cut out, put the clutch down, let it settle then pulled up clutch and continued.  It would take time but could get up to 55. So limped it home, didn't fancy being stuck on the motorway.  It wasn't like it has been when in limp mode where you accelerate and no more revs come, accelerating under load killed the engine.

Got home , called out RAC, as have homestart, RAC got the following faults.  Engine revved fine not under load. Recommended taking to a garage. Getting a bit fed up with the RAC - never had a car fixed by the roadside with them - always say - take to garage.

RAC DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM System Type: ENGINE SYSTEM TEST/VALUES Name: G8DB - DURATORQ - TDCI
DTC: P1632,Smart alternator, output circuit
DTC: P0335,Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit
DTC: P0087,Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low
DTC: P1180,Fuel Delivery System - Low
DTC: P2459,Particle filter regeneration frequency

I thought it might be the battery as this wasn't replaced when the alternator went by RAC said no, but didn't do a proper battery test.

Any insights would be appreciated. Like I say will prob scrap now as scrappage scheme will get me £2k but still annoyed.  Anyway I don't want to spend a lot of money to get it working for the next few weeks/month.

Seems like a fueling issue, when was the last time your diesel filter was replaced? Either that or a bad fuel pump (either high pressure pump or the lift pump in the tank)

Thanks for the response. I don't know when it was changed or even if it has one of these. 🙁

Annoyingly I started to run with low fuel as I didn't want to scrap it with a full tank so it might have dragged up some sludge blocking something. Ironically I had just filled up as was about to do a series of long trips. Oh well. 🙁

The fuel filter is very expensive on this engine.  £50+.  So probably hasn't been changed.  I would recommend it for running issues generally but probably not worth changing if it's going to get scrapped.  I used to run mine from full down to the red light every month (hate filling up!) and never caused any issues.

The HP pumps rarely fail on these.  There's no lift pump.  That crank sensor fault is looking the most likely to cause running issues to me.

I think its a mixture of the two, the engine is not getting enough fuel (likely clogged filter) they are around £30 ish, making it not want to run, and  the position sensor is making the engine run even less well

Thanks for the support, sadly ended up scrapping and just about nursed it to the scrap yard. Very gutted as it probably was fixable.

Now looking at a newer focus. 🙂
