New car fob doesn’t work after being coded

Featured Replies

hi

I’ve got a new key fob after putting my keys in the wash. I coded the keys into the car & it worked with no issues. However, a couple days after I’ve gone to start the car & it won’t work, the immobiliser light flashes at me & when I try to code the fob in again, it just doesn’t work. Any advice?

How did you 'code' the new fob ...

Update - the key has programmed for the locks, but the immobiliser is still flashing, so it won’t start

So, the key has not been coded to deactivate the immobiliser, just to open/close doors via remote. If you can't follow the above PATS instructions because your original key has been destroyed beyond use, you'll need to seek help from an independent locksmith, who will program your car to accept your new fob (maybe the guy that cut the blade of your new fob can help)...

I have the original key, just not the fob. I’ve only replaced the fob.

To reprogram a new fob/key, you'll need the car's original blade key and the original car fob... Otherwise, it's a locksmith visit.

So I have the blade key, the chip inside the old fob doesn’t work whatsoever, it was water damaged. So will that be a locksmith job?

Sorry bud, you have the excellent ability for confusing me LOL

How did you 'code' your new fob if you don't have a working original fob.

How have you inserted your new fob into the key barrel if you haven't had the blade cut?

Would you like to start from the beginning, though to be honest, if I were you, yes, I'd seek the help of a local independent locksmith - NOT Timpsons...

So, I put my key in the washing machine, hence the reason it was water damaged. When I tried to code the car with the old key, it wouldn’t do anything. So when I coded it with the new key only & it’s only worked for the locks & not to start it

To code an additional key yourself in order to start the engine, you need to have 2 keys that already start it.

This process is described previously under Key coding.

You will need to do as Stephen says and have a key coded by a locksmith (or Ford) in order to start the engine.

If you get 2 keys coded to start the engine, you will be able to code further keys yourself.

Only if the replacement keys are individually coded and the car is programmed to recognise the two new keys.

Independent Auto-Locksmits often only clone the original key. This can create problems in the future since the car considers that there is still only one key, because both of them have the exact same code.

On a 2007 keyfob I would have expected the transponder chip to still be a separate little part that can easily be transferred from the old keyfob over to the new one.

That's why I suggested NOT to use Timpsons. The one I would use in Belfast does a proper job by hooking up his computer to the cars OBD socket to ensure the key is properly programmed as an individual new key. I often forget that other locksmiths aren't as thorough...
