Freaky accident...

Featured Replies

This morning whilst doing a bit of cleaning, I heard the sound of glass smashing. As it was stormy, I thought something had blown against a window breaking it. Did a full search of every room, upstairs & down - nothing.

However, this afternoon I opened a kitchen cupboard to get a glass for a drink, and saw my favourite glass shattered into a 1000 pieces! Nothing had fallen on it and it was exactly in situ where left. I have never had a glass spontaneously shatter before on me!

Any ideas why it happened, or have I simply got a friendly ghost? 🤣

Poltergeist !

I believe. Have one myself 👻

My guess would be a sudden temp change.  Perhaps it was hot above a kettle or toaster, then a cold draught hit it from a window or air vent.

Everything in my kitchen seems to be creaking and cracking this week.  Nothing actually broken so far though!

Sadly, nowhere near a kettle or any source of temperature change. Really odd too that cupboard was shut at time too.

Not very friendly if it's breaking your glasses! 😀

I think we need more information to help you through. Were there glasses stacked or single? Recently out of the dishwasher? Etc etc

Just laid out single. I don't have a dishwasher apart from me. Most recently washed about 48 hours previous to self destruction!

Found a pic of glass in one piece...

Ghost then is the only explanation! 😀

Not the same, got that one whilst on holiday. Was served it in a pub and I really loved it, very solid (!) heavy glass, asked the pub if I could buy one, and the owner came over and gave me some napkins to wrap it and told me to keep it as a souvenir...

Yes I know what you mean.

Back in 2012 I went on a tour of the Budweiser brewery when in America and was given a limited bud glass. There was an American family on the tour with two daughters 22 and 18 and the tour guide said the 18 year old could not have a glass because she was not 21 !!! As you might expect no one could understand that logic and she was a bit upset, so when leaving Budweiser I went over to the family and gave them my glass. The girl was so happy, and to be honest I couldn't see me being able to get the glass back to the UK in one piece 🤔

There might be people on this forum that don't know what this is !

You need a Dansette with the six record autochanger to go with it.

Or in my case, a Rega Planar 2 also works LOL

Wow !

In 1985, I could only afford a Dual 505, which still works well, but I have replaced all the capacitors !

Also had to recone my HB1's !

Wow !

Bought it in 1978, and got a A & R Cambridge A60 amplifier to run with it LOL  Deck had a Goldring G900 SE cartridge too. Yes, I use to be a sad old git even back in those days 🤣 (Though I always aspired to a Linn Sondek LP12 LOL)

Turning into an old hi-fi thread here!

I mostly use CDs these days, but still have a Pioneer Pl112D that was bought in 1977 for use with vinyls. Swapped the cartridge a few times and the drive belt but it still does a reasonable job.

Also still using a JVC JAS 11 amp that I bought at the same time. Certainly had my money's worth out of those!

A Yamaha deck, a mere stripling of 30 years, deals with the remaining cassettes.

Worse than Dull Men's Club on Facebook! 😀

WOW from a broken glass to hifi systems. Great thread. For the glass definitely 3rd party involvement but spooky however.

As for hifi, or should I say audiophile equipment, I still have my equipment which I bought 2nd hand m8d 80's. A mix of Quad amp and pre-amp, Kef 101's (with a subwoofer designed and made by the original Wilmslow Audio) and a Thorens deck with SME-3 II and Sure V15-III cartridge tracking weight of 0.25g. How nurdish is that? 😁 but my word the sound still amazing. Forgot how loud my system could go 😂. Happy days.

I still have a Thorens TD150 MKII which we bought in the early 70's when setting up home and putting together our first proper Hi-Fi system. We changed the original Thorens tone arm for an Audio-technica AT-1005 II with an ADC VLM cartridge. That was the best we could afford at the time.  I somehow managed to scrounge an old Quad valve pre-amp and a kit-built Mullard 5-10 amp and we managed to scrape up enough to buy a pair of Celestion 15 speakers. It all worked surprisingly well. We later managed to add a Sony reel-to-reel tape deck.

Later the Quad and Mullard were replaced with an Armstrong 625 FM receiver and the Sony deck gave way to a Hitachi D-E65 cassette deck. Later still the Armstrong went in favour of a Pioneer SX-339 receiver and a Pioneer PD7700 CD player was added. This is the system we still have today. A few years back I replaced all the belts in the Hitachi but as far as I can recall the Thorens is still on it's original. The system hardly ever gets used these days.

I see that it was manufactured in 2022.  At least I THOUGHT that's what the 22 printed on the glass signified - but maybe that's the expiry date?????

Some interesting audio set ups in this shattered glass thread.

To go with my Dual deck and HB1s I do have a Rotel Amp, Pioneer CD player recorder, and a Nakamichi cassette deck (but not a Dragon, just a 580 !).  Akai reel to reel is in loft - as yet unpacked from our move in 1995 !

Yes, apologies to @StephenFord. Perhaps you should have started a hi-fi thread to discuss shattered glass mysteries!😀
