Why do folk take out 'insurance' on small aplliances?

Featured Replies

I just received an invite email from Beko to take out insurance on my fridge/freezer at almost £8/month.  (£96/year).

Now, my last fridge freezer lasted 30 years, so theoretically, I'd be forking out almost £3000 for it's life cycle.

Is it just a mindset that you need to have everything covered, 'just in case', and if so, can't you put that money aside in a piggy bank so if you ever do need a repair, you can pay from your own funds?

I just don't understand why people commit to it, though companies make literally £Millions from it.

My Beko cooker failed after 18 months from new.  Cheap appliances are not built to last.  Was still within 'partial' warranty (repair, not replace) but I couldn't cope with the hassle of it all so just gave up and made do without in the end.

Warranty is something that p*sses me right off tbh.  I just want to buy something that actually works properly and lasts a long while.  The hassle of repair of replacement is worth far more to me than the money from a warranty claim.

Just had an email today, guarantee on the washing machine has run out they can cover for £88 a year, I don’t think so. I have a further six kitchen appliances two 5 years old and four 14 years old, so far I have spent less than £150 in spare parts in the 14 years. It’s far more economical by a long way to just buy a new appliance every so often than insure them.

Speaking with experience of once being a home delivery driver for Hotpoint. In my 10 years of that the number of collections I did was mind blowing. I'd go out with 30 appliances and come back with around 15.

Basically today just stick with the manufacture guarantee. Back in the day appliances were built like brick out houses. Now? No.

Beko and other cheap sheyite I'd steer well clear of.

Again Basically if you want an appliance to last. Buy Meille Bosch etc. You get what you pay for.

And me. Phone calls and email. Managed to block some calls but others seem to get through.
