Timing Belt Change Advice

Good Morning all,

I will be doing my timing belt (and water pump) when the weather warms up (no garage or dry space at home) I've done a few before and I've always been able to support the engine from the bottom with a jack and plank of wood to span the sump without any issue, usually the repair guide (haynes) is ok with this. But as I look at the job on my 2litre diesel they don't recommend it (but they do say use a jack and large piece of wood), but as its the last resort to remove the engine mount, my question is have any of you done the same on a 2litre or did you need to use a crane or support bar? I'm curious so I know which was the better method - last thing I want is a broken sump.
