Oil stain on engine

Featured Replies

2020 Focus 4 1.5 ecoblue.

As per the pictures. Not sure where its coming from, whether from around the two bolt heads that have the dirt on them, or from the gasket above the stain above the left-hand dirty bolt head?

Should I be worried (esp as the warranty expired a couple of months ago)?

Is there an easy fix?

Or is it just a common thing, and not a problem at all?

Or even - the garage mechanic leaving an oil drip or three there when the car was last serviced (he said, embarrasingly wiping egg off face!)

Thanks - Richard

Clean it off with some solvent and see if it comes back, could be poorly cleaned off residue from idiot oil changes

I think it's from the cam carrier seal.  It's just liquid sealant between the cam carrier and the cylinder head.  Presumably very hot right above the exhaust manifold & turbo as well.

You could try gently nipping up those two bolts but I really wouldn't put any force through them.

The repair would involve removing the cambelt and camshafts in order to remove and reseal the cam carrier.  Only 'worth' doing at the same time as the cambelt in my opinion.  I'd just ignore that weep.  Maybe clean it up periodically if it's causing a hot oil smell in the cabin.

Thanks both, no need to panic in this case then! Best left alone as you say, and clean it up and keep an eye on it.

TBH the car has been so troublesome in some ways during the warranty (Bits missing, dealer needing convincing something wrong etc etc) that there's a certain lack of confidence involved.  Just 1 day before the warranty was up, the noisy steering column was replaced by one dealer after another had told me there was nowt wrong with it! Rather expensive I believe. Looking back, I've had more warranty work on this vehicle than all my previous "Almost new" ones put together, and I'm going back to the 1980's! (With one exception, a Morris Ital whose 1.7 O series engine simply would not stop weeping coolant out of the head gasket between nos. 1 and 2 cylinders).

Well, it seemed bone dry so I had a go at cleaning it with a dry paintrbrush which seems to have worked well with no smearing so that's encouraging! Will keep an eye on it

Hi everyone, new here. I have the same problem on my focus mk4 2019 (oil/liquid sealant on the bolts).

@RMurphy195 did you have any further problem with this issue after your last post, more than one year?

Should i worry or take some action? Thank you.

I was going to ask if you meant it was literally a clown but I'm not going to and will just imagine that it actually was as it makes for a interesting mental image.
