Mk4 limp mode?

Featured Replies

Does mk4 focus have limp mode? Mine just cut out on a mini roundabout! Just managed enough momentum to get half on the cycle lane rear half on the roundabout. Steering went super heavy , I assumed that was the power steering gone but the steering wheel locked.  Thankfully the dash said ‘put in P and start engine’ or words to that effect. I did , it started thank the lord. Drove home without a problem. Kinda lost confidence in the car tbh. No lights on the dash or messages on the app. Last car was a Vauxhall that I’d had in limp mode a few times , can be a good thing , will the Ford have that in certain circumstances?

I’ve been in eco last few days and switch off SS every time.

As far as I'm aware every modern car has a form of 'limp mode'.

I wouldn't expect the symptom you mention though as it's normally designed to reduce power/speed/revs rather than stop the engine.

Have you a means of checking if any fault codes are recorded?

  • Author

No I don’t have that knowledge or equipment for checking fault codes. Had the car since 2019 , this same thing happened also on a roundabout! In the first week of having the car. Lost all power but straight away got the same ‘put in park and restart’ message. No warning message to the app that time either. I can’t remember if the Ford technician checked for codes or just said bring it back if it happens again, that was 5 years ago. Good thing it started both times but it’s potentially a bit dangerous.

The ePAS steering rack is incredibly heavy when the engine cuts out.  Technically you can still steer it, it's not actually locked, but you'd have to be built like Popeye to do so...

As Ray says, that definitely isn't limp mode, would need Ford to read the codes unless you want to try Forscan yourself.

What do I need? A cable ? Plugs in under the steering wheel?

I was on a slight uphill ! Managed to leave enough space for traffic to get past. ***** timing but kinda lucky

Can use a cable if you've got a laptop.  Otherwise you'll need a Bluetooth dongle for your phone.

Can't work out how to add Amazon links but it's either the V-Linker FS cable.  Or V-Linker FD+ for iPhone.

Cheers Tom. I’ve 6 months left on the lease, I’m 99% not getting another Ford even though they tick most of the boxes. They’ve put their AP up by £500 for a 155 auto. Got an iPhone, but not sure it’s worth investing in a cable at this point. 🤔

I googled v linker , do they work only on Fords?

vLinker was developed to be used with FORScan software.

I've no idea if it would work with other software but my thoughts would be probably not.

vLinker FS cable for use with a windows based laptop:   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

I bet your battery is on the way out.

My 2019 had loads of Power steering issues, needed software updates

I agree, don't think it's worth getting the cable in your situation.  However, Ford dealerships won't generally read the codes unless there's actually a warning on the dash or a noticeable fault occurring at the time.  I think you'll probably just have to put up with it for now and hope it was just a one off.

I don’t think it’s a steering issue. More like the car has stalled going into a roundabout. Any ideas what could make an automatic stall ? SS was off as usual.

Can be caused by a low battery SOC. With out the Ford DTC's it could be just a guessing game

Diagnostics at the dealership then?
