Sean17
Hi all, purchased a car last week and had nothing but trouble with it (privately). The engine would just cut out as if I have took the keys out, but the engine would start back up fine. I have contacted the seller who has said he told me the battery connection may need looking at. Whilst looking at the fuses I noticed one of the relays was ticking (I think R1) which is the starter relay but this may be nothing. 2 days ago the engine completely stopped and Engine Malfunction light came on after leaving it for 20mins I could then start the engine again. today I managed to get it to the garage and they told me it needs a specialist in ECU as the reader was coming up with electrical faults but couldn’t narrow it down to a specific.Took it to a specialist garage in ECU they told me because of the relay sound then it needs a new ECU and would cost £600+vat. could this be the battery connection or does it sound like the ECU. I’ve contacted the seller and asked for a refund as he must of know about the faults and sold on without telling me this info or a partial refund for the cost of fixture. any help please. Thanks
unofix
Zero chance of a refund if you bought privately. You could try going through the small claims court but you would have to have absolute proof that the fault existed before you bought the car, and that the seller knew about the fault. I'd expect you to loose your claim. PS. Your profile needs updating. Still says Fiesta 2006

You would also benefit from using FORScan to read all the Ford specific DTC's as it will give more in-depth information. I suspect that many of the faults are as a result of a poor battery voltage and/or an alternator charging issue. Sean17
Nice one, Thanks mate I’ll look into that, I have contacted the previous seller and he did say he had mentioned about a faulty connection to the battery (he never) but that could possibly be it then. Hopefully. I think the relay that I could hear clicking was to the starter
Sean17
Could this be causing the fault? The cable running to the fuses looked a bit burned out! And as previous the starter relay keeps clicking. Could it be as simple as a relay
unofix
That cable has been seriously overloaded and needs replacing. It will have a high resistance due to the damage which will limit current and cause a voltage drop.
