DPF error - Focus mk4, petrol

Featured Replies

Hello all. I'm about to purchase a 2018 Focus mk4. I test drove one I like today, petrol 125 HP. It's got 40000 km on it. When I test drove it, at the first startup a DPF error popped up. The owner said that it's expected, as the car was not used for some time, and that we have to drive it for a bit and the filter will sort itself out. Indeed that was the case, we did about 15 km, stopped the engine, started it again and the error was gone. I did that two more times later, no error. In total we drove maybe 50 km or so. Overall the car drove great.

So, the question is, should I be worried about it at all, or is it indeed normal? I'm quite sensitive towards DPF issues, my mom's Mazda 3 has them all the time, it's a mess. That one's a diesel though.

I guess I will get some mechanic to take a look at the car anyway, but I wonder what you think. Thanks.

I'm confused 🤔

DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter

Yes you should be worried. Why has a petrol car got a diesel particulate filter ?

Was it not a GPF warning ? If it was then it's not normal, but there is a Ford software update that fixes the problem.

Yes, sorry. I was just as confused when I saw it today, but it must've been the GPF. English is my second language and even though I knew that "DPF filter" is a filter in diesel engines, I never really thought about what DPF actually stands for. So yeah, GPF.

Isn't it normal though if the car wasn't driven for some time, and even when it was, it was only in the city?

I should also double check the software I suppose. Can you tell me a bit more about that?

No it's not normal to get a GPF warning just because the car hasn't been used in awhile.

There has been a number of people on the forum with a GPF warning issue which require a Ford dealer to do a software update.
