How to fix broken windshield heater connector on Ford Focus

Featured Replies

I was looking around the internet for a guide on how to fix a broken windshield heater connector on my 2009 FOrd Focus MK2.5 and couldn't find much answers so decided to figure it out myself. I'll describe what I did in case someone has a similar issue in the future.

Note: this won't work if the ribbon cable broke close to the windshield (which is what usually happens), in that case the only way I know of is replacing the whole windshield. My connector broke at the intersection between the ribbon and the cable, which might be the best-case scenario.

Here are some images I took: https://imgur.com/gallery/mEGEQCl

1) Removed the rubber around the ribbon/cable intersection.

2) Removed about 1cm of protective film from the end of the ribbon.

3) Sanded both surfaces to make sure they're clean and washed with isopropyl alchohol.

4) Flattened both ends to make sure that there is as much surface contact as possible (if not enough contact is maintained then it might start heating up and burn due to extra resistance).

5) Applied low-temperature solder paste (something like THIS one) to the top of the ribbon and overlapped the ribbon and cable with the solder inbetween. I used low-temp solder because heating up the ribbon and cable enough to make normal solder melt could transfer too much heat into the windshield and crack it. I had my soldering iron set at 450C and it took around two seconds of contact to make it stick.

6) Covered the connection with insulating tape and secured the cable away from the windshield wiper mechanism with zipties to (hopefully) prevent if from breaking again.

Disclaimer: I'm an electronic engineer but not a mechanic so please do some extra research before you decide to trust my method with your car.
