Sync 2 Maps SD not removable?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Hoping someone can shed some light. I collected a Focus 2016 Titanium X (April2016 Build) today, and it’s running Maps F5 on Sync2. I was under the impression that I’d be able to buy a new Maps SD and insert this. However I’ve noticed that the USB module in the armrest is different to those I’ve seen on YouTube etc, and the SD card doesn’t seem to be removable?!
It doesn't push out like the ones I’ve seen. Does this mean I need to visit a dealer?

When you say "it doesn't push out" ????? - it does not just "pull out"

To remove sync2 SD card you first have to "push it in" first -and then when you release the pressure it pops out further and you just pull it out

Thanks Trevor. This SD card doesn’t move. It doesn’t ’push down to pop out’ and doesn’t ‘pull’ out either. It really looks like it’s not made to be removed by the average joe. Unless someone can say they’ve removed theirs a bit more forcibly?

It looks like some daft person forced the SD card in. I'd try tweezers to pull the card out. Quite possibly the spring inside the socket has dislodged.

They are intended to be removable by the owner. There is nothing special about them, it would seem yours is just stuck. - Full information is in the owners handbook.

Yes as has been said it should come out after pushing down first, I have that car with same SD set up so its jammed somehow.

In the photo in the OP, the white rectangular object appears to be wedging the card in place - it looks to me like it shouldn't be there.
Maybe the previous owner broke the socket & has wedged the card in place.

Edit: Never mind, just found one on ebay and it has the white square.

It looks like it's been put in upside down tbh.  The 'near' corner looks to have the angle cut-out that should be at the bottom.  Though I guess maps wouldn't work at all if that was the case.

What is the white thing in the photo ?

It looks like a latch to stop the card moving up. Does it have to be removed first before the SD card can be ejected ?

I'm also not sure exactly what the blue stuff is around the card, can't quite work it out.

Here is a clearer photo. It’s just some LED lighting. It doesn't move in any way. The ‘normal’ SD slot has grooves both sides. Isn’t much space for tweezers etc either to try and remove it. Just don’t want to damage it!

I think you are going to have to 'give it ago' 👍

Whats the worst that can happen ? The SD card might get broken, but it's out of date and you're going to replace it in any case.

The SD card holder might get broken? Well there is a very good chance it already is broken. A replacement can be got on eBay cheaply and they they only take 20 minutes to fit.

The SD card should easily latch down to install by just pressing the card straight down once.

Unlatch by pressing straight down once and it will partially pop up and you can then just pull it out.

Anything else and you obviously have a problem!

The picture below compares your photo with one correctly installed.

If you look at the correct one on the RH side, you will see wider "Guides" position on the LH and RH edges of the card to ensure correct location.

I'm not convinced that your card has been inserted upside down (as in the  connector end facing upwards, instead of downwards, otherwise you should see lots of little ridges on one side. I think your card has been inserted connectors side down, but rotated over 180 degrees and somehow forced in. I believe the one corner has been broken off and it is not the tapered corner (unless it is some sort of fake card).

As Rick has stated above. There's something definitely wrong with the orientation of your card. I agree it looks like it's been put in 180 degrees out of sync.

Looks like you've no choice except take the car back where you bought it from and get them to sort it. It's their responsibility for the 1st 3 months.

If the navigation is working then the card must be the correct way round or the contacts wouldn’t line up. The OP has said they have f5 which leads me to believe they’ve got that from the system info which means the SD is the correct way round.

Thanks for all your help so far guys, appreciate it.

Nav is definitely working with the SD at present. I’m going to give it a go today and try to dislodge it. If not I’ll remove that part at the weekend and try going that way.

It could well be a simple case that some tape has been put round the SD card for some reason which has caused it to become jammed in the slot.

The SD card in my pic is a genuine Ford F6.

The different looking corner could just be as a result of someone damaging the SD card trying to get it out.

The maps are working, so it is 100% inserted the correct way round.

So I’ve tried to remove the SD card using tweezers etc, it isn’t budging.
If I remove that entire USB unit does anyone know if the SD might be removable from the other side? Or am I going to need to replace that unit?
I’ll try to get the dealer to cover the cost of it but won’t hold my breath

There are 4 clips you can release to take it apart:

Thank you very much Yog!
I’ll strip it all apart this weekend

Hi all,

Have had the unit replaced today under warranty. They made a bit of a mess of it last week trying to remove the SD without luck.

Just took the unit apart to remove the old SD to check I was ordering the right replacement, and guess there’s nothing I can do with the old unit now? Should I just chuck it in the bin?

Our local council provides electrical waste bins near supermarkets etc.  Means the precious metals inside can be recovered and re-used.
