Losing coolant

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a 2010 Ford smax 1.8tdci which seems to lose coolant

ive had new coolant hoses and pipes fitted as well as new expansion tank and cap. I took it on the dual carriageway near me and the heating inside the car went cold so I got it back home and the coolant tank was empty. I’ve put steel seal through the system as a friend said it could be head gasket on the way out.
I have been having problems with it for about two to three months now. Any ideas what it could be? I’ve noticed the hose from the thermostat is flat not round now the tank is empty too I’m waiting for it to cool down before I release the pressure from the expansion tank.
I’ve had the main metal pipe from the water pump to radiator and thermostat replaced as that was leaking but now still having problems with it after all the work. I honestly am losing the will to live with this car I am thinking about giving up on it now

please any advise is grateful I’m no good with cars

Don't rule out the head gasket just because you have put Steel Seal in the coolant.

I've never known it to work if the gasket has started to blow, the only cure is a gasket change, but, prior to this, it needs proper diagnosis.

The heater going cold is a classic sign of head gasket failure.

If the hose has gone flat, there will be no pressure in the system, it will have a vacuum in there!

Thank you Alan

so I bled the coolant system again today and then took it for a drive and it overheated and lost all its coolant again all the hoses are round. One of them went flat before I put the steel seal through it but since then it’s been fine.
I was told to undo the cap and let the pressure out incase there was an air lock somewhere I’ve done this and no coolant went back into the tank I’m now thinking of getting rid of it which is a shame it’s a great car runs sweet but this coolant problem is letting it down

ive spent loads on it having coolant pipes replaced with the expansion tank and cap but I guess I got to cut my losses short and get rid of it now. It runs out of mot 17th march too and I know it will need two new tyres for it

Hi, did you end up selling the car? We are having the same issues on the same car. However, my car overheats sometimes and is fine other times. It has been to 2 garages and neither have diagnosed an issue. It's so frustrating as like yours, it's a great car, runs excellent still.

I think Thomas sold the car to someone called Tanya in Devon 🤣 He's not been back to the forum since 13th Feb.
