Focus Mk3 1.6 TDCI engine sump replacement

Featured Replies

Hi,

On the Mk3 with 1.6 TDCi Diesel, is sump removal and reinstallation straightforward? Or is there a pile of stuff in the way that needs to be dismantled first?

Thanks,

maybe front exhaust pipe may be but i think that's it 😊

Don't think you'll have to remove anything if you've got deep sockets, extensions and maybe a UJ.

The AC compressor bracket hangs over the sump but is bolted to the block above.

The sump is very thin above the exhaust end so you can probably get it out without removing that as well.

OK thanks. We had an advisory for corrosion, I've not yet checked how serious but wonder whether it would make sense just to replace it at the next oil change.

The sumps on these are made of steel so can corrode but I can't recall anyone else having to replace one due to corrosion so far.  It's probably just a bit of surface rust.  Think I'd look at it before condemning personally.

Dont think it would cost that much to replace

Well it's covered with oil on the one side, so it's probably just surface rust.

As long as it isn't leaking then just clean the rust off and paint it

Well I screwed up by neglecting this until the other day when I noticed a few drops of oil under the engine. Leaking though the sump, the vertical surface on the left of the vehicle. Unfortunately this was just day before pre-booked MOT so no real option except get the garage to deal with it. An independent so not as bad as it might have been.
