Boot lid popping open by itself. (Mark 3)

Hi. 

I recently started having an issue where my boot lid pops open on its own and in some circumstances when you try to close it it won't hold. Bizarrely I noticed also that it can sometimes be closed but if I twist the headlight bezel it will then pop open. Over the last few days I've also noticed the rear number plate light is on all the time albeit very dimly.

I have the classic water getting into the boot and rear footwells issue common with the Mark 3 and the rain has been bad recently. Is this issue connected to my light switch/boot/ number plate light issue do you think? Until the car dries out and we get better weather I can't tell. 

Any help would be appreciated.
