Oil Light Issue After DIY Oil Change

Featured Replies

Hello fellow Ford Focus owners,

I'm reaching out to the community for some advice and guidance regarding an issue I encountered after performing an oil change on my car. I recently took on the challenge of changing the oil and oil filter on my Ford Focus. I replaced both the oil sump plug and the oil sump plug washer, as well as the oil filter and its fittings.

Initially, everything seemed to go smoothly, and the servicing appeared successful. However, shortly after completing the oil change, the oil light on my dashboard came on. Strangely, I noticed that the light goes off as long as the car is revving above 1.1k rpm.

Unfortunately, I've hit a roadblock in diagnosing the issue because my car is was fitted with a blackbox, which prevents me from using the OBD port to check for error codes until I get it removed. While the car still feels fine to drive, I'm concerned about the potential implications if this issue is left unresolved.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem after an oil change? Could it be related to the the oil filter replacement? I would greatly appreciate any insights or advice on how to troubleshoot and address this issue before it escalates into a major problem.

Thank you in advance.

Did you put enough in?

The oil light is indicating low oil pressure, keeping the revs up just means the oil pump spins faster and creates more pressure, so the light will go out if it's on the edge of tolerance.

the spring on the oil pressure relieve valve, is like one you'd find in a budget Chinese retractable ball point pen that's been left outside for 25 years in a bucket of salty water

its external on some - so you have the opportunity to buy a £150 pump take the spring out and swap it over before you need a new engine

Did you push the nipple of the filter hard into the hole in the base of the filter housing before refitting the cap?

I put 3.85L of oil in and i've been checking it regularly and I see no indications of an oil leakage under the car either.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'll have a look into it.

Ok.  I don't think you can really get the oil change wrong, so I would still suspect a filter issue.  For the sake of £10, I would just replace the filter again.  Making absolutely sure that it's the correct one, and that it has the little rubber o-ring seal around the nipple before pushing it firmly into place.

Cheers for the advice.

i`m going for oil filter not fitted back on correct, wait until the morn when all the oil will have drained out filter, undo it and refit it back on again, and you`ll be ok 🙂

its the spring

did you put the filter element in the cap and refitted the cap with the element on it or did you put the filter on the engine first? if you put it on the cap and then reinstalled it as an assembly then it is very likely the nipple isn't actually seated correctly (causing your pressure issue). i know you say you believe you pushed it in properly, but the order of reassembly really matters on these.
