Mk2 upgrade to heated windscreen.

Featured Replies

My Mk2 LX wasn't fitted with a heated windscreen at the factory.

However, the plug for the switch is fitted to the wiring loom behind the switch panel. It is clipped into the back of the switch blanking plug as is standard.

Without having to remove the front wipers and scuttle panel, does this mean that the rest of the wiring is already there?

If the windscreen ever needs to be replaced, could a heated screen be fitted?

I think I remember reading on here that a relay would also need to be added. Does this push into place in the engine bay fusebox?

Is it possible to remove an intact windscreen from a scrap car without breaking it? I know of an independent windscreen fitter who would probably be willing to swap the screen if it is possible.

anything is possible

you live in london where it never gets cold !
you have just come out of winter !
global warming is increasing temps !

maybe the ones with toys get a higher rated alternator - these things suck power big time

hers has coding in the GEM for the heated screen - use a tool like emlconfig to see if you have a GEM with correct choices
you can get a screen out - but the heater screen wiring would likely get damaged
be aware two screens - the decent one with the clips for the "RLS" to do auto lights and wipers has a different mount for a different better self dimming mirror
you won't have the wiring for a self-dimming mirror nor a GEM with pinouts to run the wires from

you will have a lot of fun pretending a stone chip needs an upgraded screen - they have been wise to this trick for many years and fight like hell to be a nuisance - a screen with heater was £500 pre-covid - expect that to be 1k now (I guess)

Thanks for the reply.

What made me think of it is that I recently had to remove the switch panel. I saw that the switch wiring was there.

There were frozen water droplets on the windscreen this morning which were a pain to clear. It would have been easier with the heated screen.

The last car I had with a heated windscreen was my 1990 Escort RS Turbo - I still miss it...

I was looking out of the window last year during autumn - I hate it when you get the damp rubbish on the screen where you need to keep working the wipers to see where you're going
