Mk1 Rattling Engine Noise - Drive Belt Problem?

Featured Replies

Hi folks

First post on here.

The engine on my 1.6 Focus mk1 started making quite a bad rattling sound.

I checked the battery voltage:

Engine off = 12.23v, engine on (without electrics on) = 14.64v and electrics turned on =14.57v

When the engine is on and I turn the steering wheel, the sound changes - sounds worse, then it settles back to the other rattling.

Any suggestions what it might be?

-> I recorded some video of the engine when I turn the steering wheel here so you can hear it (80mb)  - https://bit.ly/3IqDmN2

-> Slightly longer video of the noise with the belt from a couple of angles (163Mb) - https://bit.ly/3P8PuG8

Appreciate any advice 🙂 and many thanks in advance.

Can't see anything obvious in the video.

The belt looks very shiny so probably needs replacing.

Though that noise sounds more like either a worn bearing or a seized pulley that the belt is slipping over rather than turning.

It could be the power steering pump though the engine revs are increased when you turn the wheel so that might be a red herring.

Best thing you can do is remove the belt and then spin each pulley.  If any are seized then you'll know.  If any sound like a roller skate when spun then the bearings are worn.
